Edam is a small town, and just walking around you come across typlicaly Dutch things a canal lock and the Dutch opening bridge.and boatyard. On market days you can see Edam cheese on sale. Also men wearing clogs on their feet.
Streets and Canals of Edam
Each and every city, town or village that we visited in the Netherlands gave us the opportunity for so many photos, I guess they would be called "photogenic" and we found many "Kodak" points (places where you should take a picture ;O))
The canals and streets seem to be equal partners in the makeup of the town and take up equal space as well. But keep an eye out for the unusual houses that seem to show a personality all their own, like the series of "crooked" houses in the last picture, sort of reminded me of a group of friends returning home after a long night at the local pub, the two on the sides supporting their friend in the middle.
- Hiking and Walking
Bridges of Edam
Edam has several canals which are crossed by beautiful white lifting bridges. You're bound to encounter several on a stroll around town.
My favorite bridges are on the Oosterkade, in the Eastern end of Edam.
The Dam Square is considered to be the centre of the town. The Dam, incorporating lock gates, was built in 1544 on the orders of Emperor Karel V.
The town hall
The town hall also houses the tourist information office.
In winertime be aware that the tourist information office has limited opening hours.
The Lutherian church
Build in between the houses in the city centre, you find this church. Constructed between 1739 and 1741.
The Waag - weigh house
This is a brightly coloured building where the cheeses were weighed - today you can buy cheeses and gifts.
