Enkhuizen Jailhouse

Favorite thing: When i peeked throught the windows from the jailhouse, i tried to imagine how it must have been in medieval times when someone got thrown in such building. At first they only had room for 2 prisoners, but after some years they had too expand hehe

Enkhuizen 2003

Favorite thing: This postcard was send by some friend who lives at Enkhuizen and i spend 1 weekend there in June.
We had a guided tour by the Touristoffice arranged and i think we all liked this tour very much, its about a 2hour walk through the center, starting end ending at the harbour.
Enkhuizen is a pittoresque city with very old buildings, beautifull nature, great cafes and a harbour where u can sit for hours just to have a look at all the beautifull ships and boats.

GLORIOUS VIEW ENKHUIZEN.

Favorite thing: Weekly concerts are given on both carrillions and I don't have to tell you how wonderful they are....

The lake offers good water sport facilities.

To protect the city against te often violent sea and enemy invasions, 2 walls were built in the 16th and the 17th century, the centuries during which the city was enormous wealthy!
One is called ' DE ZEEMUUR" Aand the other one is the ''vestingwal" AND NEEDLESS TO SAY THAT BOTH ARE WORTHY OF A VISIT ON FOOT OR BY BIKE.

The North Western part of the city (de BOERENHOEK) is rich in canals and bridges...

In Summer ENKHUIZEN is the largest Dutch port for traditional sailing ships.
The harbour offers an impressive view of arriving and departing vessels.
Did you know that many of these vessels can be chartered for individual or group trips??

Enkhuizen is also a popular port for modern sailing vessels.

Fondest memory: In Summer several FERRY BOATS leave ENKHUIZEN on a regular base for destinations MEDEMBLIK, URK AND STAVOREN.

Lovers of MONUMENTS and water will have an unforgettable experience by visiting ENKHUIZEN...

N.B.: the local TOURIST OFFICE (VVV) will be happy to assist you all, visitors!

There are also special info brochures on walks and cycle routes available!

By now, you know everything about ENKHUIZEN, I think!

I did my best, for you!

THE

Favorite thing: the lovely town where "my" bottleshipmuseum is!.
This town really is a historical jewel on the IJsselmeer; it dates back from between 1000 - 1200.

It received its city-rights in 1355! Imagine that!

During the 16th and 17th Century the city prospered, mainly due to the herring fishing (see travelogues and other tips) and trading by the East and West-India Company.

Witnesses of this period are the many monumental buildings, such as the "DE DROMEDARIS", an old defence tower at the entrance to the harbour (opposite the Railway Station), the "KOEPOORT", ENTRANCE TO THE CITY FROM THE LAND AND SEVERAL WAREHOUSES, usually used by the East and West_India Company, some presently housing the ZUIDERZEE MUSEUM, with an OPEN-AIR MUSEUM at the sea-side (you will be taken there by boat!!!)

ENKHUIZEN has 2 impressive churches in late Gothic Style and it also has two "HEMONY" CARILLONS, situated in the St. Pancras Tower and the DROMEDARIS.

Fondest memory: visiting my BOTTLESHIP MUSEUM, having tea/lunch/dinner as close near the water as possible, walk around there and enjoy the atmosphere to end with a boattrip!

Gate in the Drommedaris

Favorite thing: The weapon shield of Enkhuizen consistsof a blue field with 3 herrings. The herrings are there because this used to be a herring fishing town.
You can see this sign on lots of buildings in Enkhuizen.
