    DE AMSTERDAMSE POORT, A MONUMENT.

    AMSTERDAMSE POORT

De AMSTERDAMSE POORT (AKA SPAARNEWOUDERPOORT) consist of a high rectangular gate-building with 2 OCTAGON TOWERS on the outside.

This oldest part dates back to the 15th Century.

The lower gate between the 2 lower towers in front of the higher one is connected with the main gate by means of "weergangen" , a closed corridor.

In this way a little walled yard was formed that could be used for defence activities if necessary!

In the masonry of the 2 large towers we can find the coat-of-arms of Haarlem, of Maximiliaan van Oostenrijk and that of Maria van Bourgondië.

ADDRESS: Hoek gedempte Herensingel en de Amsterdamse vaart in HAARLEM.

This is the only city gate that still exists
