Bears playing at the train station square

The Haarlem train station square has to be one of the most ugly of the Netherlands. It looks very unorganised and there are many terrible looking buildings. The train station itself looks nice, but apart from that nothing does. The square is one you want to get away from as fast as possible. Most people therefor miss this beautiful sculpture of two bears playing with eachother. When you've seen this you can hurry away and into the city!

Sculpture in front of Amsterdamse Poort

Looking up to the Amsterdamse Poort

In front of the Amsterdamse Poort (Amsterdam Gate), which is the only remaining gate in Haarlem you will find this sculpture. People are looking up to the gate, which was there to protect them for many years. Unfortunately thee gate couldn't protect them from the Spaniards in 1573. At that time Haarlem had only 18.000 inhabitants. The Spaniards however came with a very strong army of 14.000 soldiers, so Haarlem was no match for them....
