As we walked along the the embankment of Spaarne River/ Canal we found there were several small boats offering tours. These were mostly open boats offering a similar service to what is offered on the Venice canals.
My thoughts were that this would be ideal for small groups who want to do their own thing.
The skipper of the small boat spoke to us as we walked past and even offered us to "come aboard" to take some photos.
An ideal way to to tour the river, could be expensive unless you were in a group.
An alternative service for those who prefer a larger ferry is the "Olympia".
We did not take the canal cruise but walked a section of the river. I think I would prefer the "Olympia" as it provides the opportunity to get outside in the open air, additional height from the upper deck to view the sights.
I find that on glass covered canal tours it is almost impossible to take good photos through the glass top.
The Spaarne River and canal is one of the most historic districts of Haarlem. Ideal to walk along the river and view the beautiful buildings. We walked riverside for the best part of an hour and found it most rewarding, a big plus was the activity on the river as well as the variety of water craft.
The canal cruise provides an alternative, the choice is yours.
In Haarlem (note: 2 'aa') you can do a nice boat ride and hear abit about the history.
Cruises daily from 12 o'clock, each hour until 16 hrs. A tour takes 50 minutes.
Cost: 9.50 euro per adult
Make reservations by phone or e-mail (see below).
You can also choose for other boat tours such as Romantic, High tea, Candlelight, etc. etc.
