Train, Haarlem

more a question, is it ok to take cycles on the trains from Haarlem to Amsterdam? I cant see anything on the train website. In London you can when its not a peak time train so assume its similar? Any ideas would be great!

Haarlem has a very beautifull trainstation designed by architect D.A.N. Margadant. It was built between 1905-1908. I will tel you more about it in another chapter.

The first railway track in the Netherlands was built in 1839. It's the track from Haarlem to Amsterdam.

From and to Amsterdam central trainstation, it is at about a 17 minutes trip. Trains depart and arrive like every ten minutes.

To the beach (Zandvoort) you can catch a train and it will take you at about 10 minutes. In the summer trains will go more frequently to Zandvoort, but during other seasons, there still depart like two trains an hour.

Almost every town in The Netherlands has it's own trainstation and can be reached very easily by train.

Haarlem is very easily reached. The train can bring you there in no-time. From Amsterdam Central the train only takes about 15 minutes. What's even better is that a train leaves for Haarlem about every 10 minutes. The trains leave Amsterdam Central at these times past every hour:

.07 Intercity takes 13 minutes
.11 Fast train takes 15 minutes
.21 Stoptrain takes 17 minutes
.37 Intercity
.41 Fast train
.51 Stop train

Unless you rented a bike and love to endure biking between this two cities, the best transport there is is the regional train from Haarlem main train station.

Fare is EUR7 for return ticket.

As usual it took me awhile to buy the ticket the first time as the vending machines don't want to accept my credit card, so I have to ask the kind old man at the tobacco shop right beside the entrance/exit. So he told me to go 1 floor up and get down on the other side which is in fact the main entrance and the ticket office is right there. I did and bought my ticket from there.

From Grote Markt (central square), it's an leisure 10-minute walk to the main train station.

Travel from Haarlem to Amsterdam is quite easy and takes only 15 minutes per way. Th train ends at Amsterdam Centrall where you will have to take a 10-15 min. stroll to get to Dam Square.

Haarlem is close enough to Amsterdam so one can go there quite easily as a day trip. The ride takes only 15 minutes and there are numerous trains throughout the day. So take a break from the capital and visit this historic town.

More than 50 trains per day are leaving Amsterdam Centraal for Haarlem which means that you have not to worry about timetables. Just go to the station and take the train, you have only a few minutes to wait for it, The ride is about 15 minutes.

Getting to Haarlem from Amsterdam is really easy. There are several trains every hour, the sprinter train you see in the picture goes every 30 min and takes only 15 min to get to Haarlem. It's 6 Euro return, which I think is a great price.

Next to the train station there is a little tourist office where you can buy a little map and then it takes only 10 min walking to the city center.

The Haarlem station is one of the nicest stations I have seen (inside). Outside it just looks like a modern building but the interior really is worth entering.
Haarlem station is very well situated in the city and in front there is a central square with bus stops.

We took the train from Amsterdam to Haarlem. It takes less than 15 minutes though we did have some delays at the station.

Interesting fact* The distance from Amsterdam to Haarlem is the same as from the tip of Manhattan to Harlem in New York.

After arriving at the airport take the train to Haarlem, especially if you are travelling light. If you have a lot of heavy luggage a taxi would be the best way to get to your accommodations in Haarlem.

Also, getting from town to town if you dont have a car is easy, just take the train. It's fast, convenient, and relatively inexpensive.
