    The Haarlem train station

    by pieter_jan_v Written May 11, 2015

In 1939 Haarlem got connected to Amsterdam by the first Dutch railway tracks. The first station was just outside the city walls at the Amsterdam gate.

In 1842 a new station at the present location North of the city center was constructed and a railway bridge over the river was build to connect the station to the line to Amsterdam.

From 1906 to 1908 a new and elevated station was build by architect D.A.N. Margadant. The building is the only Dutch station in Jugendstil style.

In 1953 a third platform was added to the station.

    Haarlem Train Station

by Mikebb Updated Aug 12, 2013

We arrived at Haarlem train station by metro from Amsterdam Centraal station. It took approximately 30 minutes and our train stopped once on the way.

The walk from the station to the Old Town Square would take approx 10 minutes, but we took around 30 minutes as there were so many old buildings we stopped to admire and photo. This town is full of history.

Its easy to catch a train to Haarlem with frequent train services on any of the following routes. The trip only takes around 20 mins from Amsterdam.

    Amsterdam - Zandvoort

    Amsterdam - Breda

    Hoorn - The Hague

    Amsterdam - Uitgeist

    The Hague - Haarlem

The Grote Markt (Grand Square) of Haarlem is about a ten minute walk from the station along cobbled streets lined with trendy shops and cafes.

The beautiful station building is classified as a Rijksmonument which means it is a National Heritage site.

The trains run pretty much on time. I will always remember the courtesy of the Dutch people. While waiting for a train to Amsterdam, we heard an announcement over the loud speaker. A person near by knew we couldn't understand Dutch so he came over and informed us the train was moved to another track. WE found that helpfulness all over the Netherlands.
