IJmuiden Northsea Canal Locks.

The locks are one of the attractions you have to visit while at IJmuiden.
Seeing the big ships coming and being towed is a ever attracting sight.

There's free parking.

several: If you get hungry

Sea air makes hungry that is no secret. So therefore there are a few places on the beach were you can get, coffee, icecreams, snacks etc.

On the start of the pier is a more sophiscated restaurant. For a decent meal but also of course a coffee with applepie. Its custom to take coffee with applepie when going to the beach.

DFDS Ferry

IJmuiden has a ferry terminal for the DFDS daily ferry to Newcastle, UK.

The terminal is outside the locks so the ferry is not delayed by that; sailing time is 16 hours.

Corus, seen from IJmuiden

Favorite thing: In 1918 the Dutch State, the counsil of Amsterdam and a group of private investors grounded the Koninklijke Nederlandse Hoogovens en Staalfabrieken (Hoogovens of KNHS).

The Netherlands wanted to make their own steel, so the Iron works construction works were started in 1920 at the North side of the Northsea canal at IJmuiden.

In 1924 the first mill was in operation, following by a second one in 1925.

Not only steel was made; other industries emerged, like the Bijproductenfabriek (gas and tar), Phoenix Steenfabriek (bricks), the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Kooksovengassen (gas and fertilizer), the Provinciaal Elektriciteitsbedrijf Noord-Holland (Power plant), the Cementfabriek IJmuiden (cement), Van Gelder Paper Industries (profiting from the heat) and Martin Staalfabriek (steel).

In 1999 the KNHS merged with British Steel and together they formed Corus.

Favorite thing: Een doodgewone vissersman, breeduit staande in waterlaarzen,

Wezelaar (1901 - 1984).

Leaving the Netherlands......

Favorite thing: Travelling into the Netherlands across the North Sea brings you into IJmuiden. Entering the port through the long, winding piers you're met with the sight of yachts, boats and the beach on one side, all joining the clean blue north sea. On the other side the Corus iron ore works throws its industrial pollution into the blue sky..............

Fondest memory: Watching IJmuiden and the Dutch coastline disappear over the horizon........wondering when i'd be back.....

Favorite thing: Next to the Pier is a harbour were the ore for Corus is being handled.
A bit more to the right is the city of IJmuiden. A place all concected with the sea, fishing, cargo, marine port for sailers, ferry to New Castle, it has it all.

Favorite thing: If you take your face away from the sea and watch back you can the big industrial site of Corus behind you.
For one a major pollution of the view for others a marvel of high tech industry.
