Favorite thing: The clear RED/WHITE BLOCKED MEETING POINT in the Plaza area.

The meeting point is the most pratical point to meet. All 3 arrival halls lead to the central Schiphol Plaza area where the cube is located.

In fact the cube is a piece of art called CODA by artist Dennis Adams (1995).

Favorite thing: There is a quiet corner at the Communication Center located at the first floor in the transfer area-Lounge 2, where you can use the Internet.

Throughout the Airport there's WiFi Internet available, so you also can communicate by wireless over the Internet from your own laptop.

At the Schiphol Plaza there are some Internet terminals close the the Meeting point cube, but at rediculous rates.

    Blue Skies And Flying Bird-machines

by RoyJava Updated Jul 24, 2008
    plane-view-schiphol

Favorite thing: As I had never heard about a "spotterplaats" (spotter place)
it was a kind of surprise to discover 2 years ago a lot of people like to watch aircraft.

I love to visit Schiphol Airport for a walk, a look at all the tourists, and a drink or small eat.

    And see the planes ...

Fondest memory: It must be told I already loved those spectacular moments of
    "taking off and landing" planes
when I was a child, joining my dad
and going to the place where he used to work >>>
    Jefman Airport - Sorong .
Where we could come to the planes very very close ...

(I do know a lot of people do not like the noise, the air and the planes at all ... unfortunatley, as we travel by airplanes like buses)

A big splash of green in a hostile world

    grass and sedum roof
    1 more image

Favorite thing: If you have any interest in 'green' or ecological building then Schiphol Airport is quite interesting. Above the concourse to the railway station is a massive, curved grass roof.

I wrote a dissertation at college on 'green roofs'. Germany, Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands have lots of them. They help make the building blend in with the surroundings, create a home for wildlife, humidify the air, absorb rainwater, insulate and protect the building.

The large planted roof at Schiphol was created in 1998. It is actully not grass, but sedum (succulent plants) and moss, on a thin layer of special growing matter. It was installed by a German firm, Strodhoff & Behrens Begruennungs GmbH.

Of course, this roof does very little to combat the major problem of noise, carbon emissions and other pollution that the 1000's of aircraft create every week. In that sense, it is more a public relations exercise by the airport, than a serious contribution to saving our planet.

But all the same, I personally think it looks much nicer than a great expanse of metal roof!!

Fondest memory: Actually I found the best way to see the green roof is to walk out of the front doors of the airport to the drop-off point. It is quite difficult to see form above - you can look out of the first floor windows on the way to Departures. Also, you can get a fair view from the far south corner of the Panorama Terrace, near the triangular lift.

    big blokes

Favorite thing: These two sturdy gentlemen were caught trying to smuggle themselves into the country as hand-luggage!!!

    OK, I lied again.

There are several large objects of public art, of various kinds, around the airport. And a small extension of the Rijksmuseum, if you have the time. The two bronze sculptures (pictured) are good fun and great as seats for weary travellers. You can find them on the route to/from Gate D.

  • Schiphol Airport

by sabsi Written Jun 4, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Schiphol Airport is one of the nicest airports I know. It's one of the biggest in Europe but still it doesn't feel too big. I almost missed a flight here because the duty free shopping area was too nice.

Train connections to and from Schiphol airport are excellent from almost everywhere in the Netherlands and also from Germany and Belgium.

If you need more information I can recommend the official website of the airport (http://www.schiphol.nl) as well as pieter_jan_v's excellent Schiphol page (http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/2f01c/6fbd0)
