The Netherlands is part of the Schengen treaty countries. Visitors with a citizinship of the following countries must have such a viusum.
The approval for a visum can take up to two months, check the application procedure.
At Schiphol only refugees (Asylum seekers) will be going through a lengthly on the spot approval procedure, that can take up some days. This procedure is done by the Immigratie- en Naturalisatie Dienst (IND), a justice department. Travellers without the proper paperwork normally will be refused entry and will be send back to their original point of departure.

Potable water (water from the tap) normally is drinkable throughout The netherlands.
At Schiphol Airport special water drinking points are installed.
Bottled water is sold in many shops in the transfer area.

It is good to know that the Polderbaan spotter's place does not end at the place of the parking cars.
When you drive on for about 20 metres there is the end of the Polderbaan (IJweg) where is a small roundabout for turning back.
Here you can park the car, too. And watch the planes better, or just take a nice walk in the country around. With good weather it is worth of it, enjoy your walk ...

IMPORT REGULATIONS FOR THE NETHERLANDS
When you are returning from a country outside the European Union, you will be subject to the Dutch import regulations. So make sure that you do not bring back too much, in particular liquor and tobacco articles. Every person of 17 and older is allowed to import into the Netherlands:
200 cigarettes or 250 grammes of tobacco (shag or pipe tobacco) or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars.
1 liter of liquor or 2 liters of sparkling wine or liqueur wines such as sherry or port.
2 liters of non-sparkling wine.
50 grammes of perfume and 0.25 liters of eau de toilette.
500 grammes coffee or 200 grammes coffee extracts or coffee essence.
100 grammes tea or 40 grammes tea extracts or tea essence.
If you are importing more than these maximum quantities, you will have to pay VAT on this and possibly also taxes and import duties.
You can import articles with a value less than Euro 175,00 from outside the European Union free of Import- and Value added taxes.

This ain t exactly a local custom but it seems it is a world wide habit ... taking the free goodies that are supplied by the hotel like soaps and, if you are a real dare devil, even bath towels and robes.
I sometimes do take a small soap with me but have never taken something bigger.
Since I was travelling with my father I thought I d better not but to my surprise I found out later on that he did take the soap with him! Sigh...

More Dutch aviation history
In 1934 the Dutch airplane "De Uiver" (means the Storch) won the handicap-race for airplanes from London to Melbourne. It was a DC-2 from the KLM. This was a breakthrough historically seen although Dutch airplanes from KLM were already connecting the Dutch Indies (Indonesia) with The Netherlands.
Fokker, our national pride
Antony Fokker lived from 1890 until 1939 and can well be regarded as one of the pioneers in aviation history. This Dutch aircraft- designer and producer was born in the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) and later studied in Haarlem (NL). Fokker built his first factory in Germany as the climat to improve airplanes was here a lot better during World War I in which The Netherlands stayed neutral. After the war Fokker established factories in The Netherlands as well as in the US. Until recently Fokker's heritage, the factories in NL, kept on building airplanes. Now however they were competed away by much bigger companies and have specialised in the production of spacecraft-parts as a part of the ESA-organisation (European Space Agency).
Besides the blue from KLM, there's Red!
The company with which KLM is cooperating now for several years is the American aircraftcarreer NorthWest. That is the reason why you see - besides the many blue airplanes from KLM, als quite a few red ones. Deal is that NorthWest uses Schiphol as maingate to Europe in return of which KLM is allowed to use as many airport in the United States as it wants to.
Therefor, for inbound airtraffic from the United States, please check NorthWest and KLM ... the have the widest range in possibilities.
KLM, the flying Dutchman, our pride in the sky
The KLM is -as said - the oldest civil (or say commercial) airliner in the world. We are quite proud of this and also knwoing that it is still one of the most rewarded airline-companies. It's services are pristine and no, not all stewardesses are blond. Also here one will see the multicultural society of The Netherlands. KLM (Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij = Royal Airtraffic Company) is not the only aircraftcarreer in The Netherlands. There's also Martinair and - mostly operating with charter-flights - Transavia, Air Holland and Dutchbird.
Information: on paper and on screen
On several places within the airportbuildings are informationdesks. Here you can be assisted personaly in regards to all questions about Schiphol. There are also enormous panels with the map and in both named places you can get the little handy guide-book in which everything is explained clearly. Furthermore one also can find info-columns, that have interactive answers to your questions. These computers are - for example - in the central area of the airport: the Plaza.
A sea of luggage-trolleys
Little cars to transport your luggage are everywhere and can be left anywhere after use ... that is ... put them where the others are, please. In the parkinghouses, near the busstops, on the trainplatforms for those who go hom (or on holiday) from here. Immediately at the luggage-bands for those who arrive in The Netherlands.
