    Platforms underneath the airport

    by Pavlik_NL Written Aug 24, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

On the line Amsterdam to The Hague, the tracks disappear underground near Schiphol and underneath the airport the platforms are waiting for passangers that wants to travel from the airport to their main destinations somewhere in The Netherlands (or even further in Europe).
The platforms can be reached by the automatic stairs going down the central part of the airport, called "Schiphol Plaza". Follow the signs with a train and saying "naar de sporen / to the platforms". On top of the stairs you will see flipboards informing you about the next train leaving from the platform beneath it.
Through the URL you will find out the trainconnections of the Dutch Railways (NS = Nederlandse Spoorwegen).
How to get tickets? See my next general tip!

    Buying traintickets to any direction

In Schiphol Plaza there are two ways in getting a trainticket. The windows at the large counters of the NS (watch for the blue-yellow colours surrounding it). Here you will be helped personally (doesn't cost anything more) and this is the best way if you need extra information.
The other fast way is the ticketing-machines that are on the central square (see picture). In these you can find postalcodes of all destinations in The Netherlands and order a one way (enkele reis) or to-from (retour). The machines take cash as well as various pin- and credit-cards.

Even the stewardesses of KLM do not only fly!

    Cheap busses and expensive taxis

    by Pavlik_NL Written Aug 24, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

To those destinations that are not connected by train, one could choose to go to by bus. They are waiting for the passengers at the central square in front of Schiphol Plaza. Busses are comfortable and have many stops. Big chance it brings you very close to your point of intrest. Okay, they are not that fast, but ... who needs fast on a holiday!
Taxis are available on the same place, however keep in mind that a taxi is terrible expensive in The Netherlands. The drivers are polite and know the littlest street or alley in a large range, but ... the meter is running!

    Bicycle Directions

    by pieter_jan_v Updated Nov 21, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Yes is it possible to go to Schiphol by bicycle. From the center of Amsterdam go to the South-West through Sloten and cross the Ringvaart. In the village of Badhoevedorp just take the Sloterweg. Almost at the end there is a small bicycle path to the left going underneath the A4 Highway. Thereafter take a right to the Schipholtunnel. Once more go underground. From the tunnel take the direction you want to go to at Schiphol Center.

The bicycle paths around Schiphol are part of the "knooppuntennetwerk Amstelland-Meerlanden" since 2008. The Netherlands gets an increasing number of charted cycle routes, which are connected at major junctions. These routes are published in special cycle maps and available at many bookshops.

Schiphol has a charging location for E-bikes between the Sheraton Hotel and the Schiphol Plaza; see picture.

Schiphol is the Netherlands' main airport and is located just south of Amsterdam.

In 2004, Schiphol ranked fourth in Europe in terms of passenger traffic behind London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt International Airport.

It has large shopping areas and Schiphol Plaza is a shopping centre before customs. There is a supermarket and Food Village that is open until midnight seven days a week.

enough restaurants when youre hungry or thirsty.
lots of shops, some cheaper than others, so have a look in several shops before buying drinks or cigarettes.

    POLDERBAAN

by RoyJava Updated Aug 18, 2008

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Getting to the new Polderbaan aircraft-spotters place is quite complicated ...

Take the highway A4, and turn off to the right/left to Aalsmeer, ...
(depends where you come from, direction Amsterdam-Schiphol or The Hague-Schiphol)

You will drive right onto the Kruisweg.

Turn to the left when coming from The Hague,
turn to the right when from Amsterdam.

Just follow the Kruisweg straight on ...

After about 6 kilometres turn to the right into the Adrianahoeve ...

Follow the road for about 200 metres (you'll pass a part of the small village Hoofddorp).

When you get to the IJweg,... turn to the right on the IJweg!

Drive for about 2 kilometres (is like a farmer's road) ...

You will see a no through road, still named the IJweg!

Drive into that no through road straight on, and you will see the square at the right where the plane-spotters place is ... named >>>

  • thanks for your tips

by karystena Written Feb 5, 2013

Thanks for the links. Just found out that this may be a problem when I was looking for direct flights from Calgary to Manchester. They don't seem to start up again until May.
Ottawa is thousands of miles away, and if I mail in my passport to renew it I don't know if I'd get it back in time. Also I won't be going near London, England to renew there. I'll try and find out more, but where I live (way out in the mountains)even to get passport photos done will require 4 hours of driving. And I don't have a Canadian passport, only EU (UK).

    Hello Pieter Jan,

I found your last post on where to park at Schiphol and I have to thank you. I just came from France from amazing holidays.
Before flying I didnt know if I should take the train with my children and wife plus the luggage, taking a taxi or park my car at the Airport. Of course parking the car for 7 days at the Schiphol parking is very expensive but then I started looking at the companies you posted and there are good prices.
In the and I found 7 days 35 euros parking in Mercure hotel close to the airport in the last company you posted, however is not moypark but mobypark. After I park my car they took me in the shuttle for free to the airport.
I must admit it was very convenient the price and the services . by train its a hassle with my kids and taxi was around 120 euros go and back. So the best option I found was this.

If it helps this is the link to airport: mobypark.com/en/city/Amsterd...

I hope is helpful for the rest of travelers.
