    Possible Crime

The following is a crime warning issued by the US government:

CRIME: While the rate of violent crime in the Netherlands is low, tourists are occasionally targeted, usually in conjunction with robbery attempts. Visitors to larger cities frequently fall prey to pickpockets, bag snatchers, and other petty thieves. While thieves may operate anywhere, the U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam receives frequent reports of thefts from several specific areas:

The train from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Central Station is particularly plagued by thieves, who often work in pairs. In those instances, one thief distracts the victim, often by asking for directions, while an accomplice moves in on the victim's momentarily unguarded handbag, backpack, or briefcase. The thieves typically time their thefts to coincide with train stops so they may quickly exit.

Within Amsterdam, thieves are very active in and around the Central Train Station, the WTC/Zuid Train/Tram Station, the red light district, in restaurants, hotels, and on public transportation, especially trams 1, 2, and 5 between the Central Station and the Museum District.

Throughout the Netherlands, thefts of bicycles and of personal belongings (such as briefcases and computer bags) from automobiles are very common.

Personal Note: Many pickpockets operate in organised small groups and travel from one European city to another. See also my Amsterdam Warning for Pickpocking Tip.

    Location Spotters-place

by RoyJava Updated Jul 24, 2008

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Watch the spotter-places when going for a nice view, or take a pic!

You could go to the wrong spot where is not that much to see.

Already mentioned that the Kaagbaan - Aalsmeerderweg - Rozenburg has been closed.

When visiting the Aalsmeerbaan - Anchoragelaan (located near Schiphol South-East ) you will need some excellent equipement, because the view is not that close ...

The Buitenveldert spotters-place - Loevesteinseweg Randweg is right next to Mc Donald's though rather a long distance from aircraft views ...

The Zwanenburgbaan - Tweeduizend El (direction Zwanenburg) is not such a good spotters-place for nice views ...

Until the "expected" Aalsmeerderweg will be a spotters-pace again the Polderbaan - IJweg - Vijfhuizen is the best place to watch the aircraft landing and taking off ...

So don't let fool you !

    Don't Feed The Birds!

by RoyJava Updated Jul 22, 2008

    sign-board-schiphol

When entering a spotters-place you'll see this yellow sign board.

The spotters-places are in the middle of the Dutch meadow-lands. So a lot of birds fly around and, even the predatory birds spy for a pray.

On the sign board you will read that it is strictly forbidden to feed the birds and please, donot leave any kind of food leftovers!

For the safety of the aviation!

So leave the spotters-place clean behind, tnq!

It is not! There are gates which is strictly forbidden to pass these gates!

For pictures it is very nice of this point and enjoy the watching of the planes ...

Or take a nice walk in the country.

included the airports, restaurants, bars etc. !!!

Smoking people will store up outside the buildings everywhere, a rather funny view to watch ...

    Water catchers

Schiphol is very creative in the unlikely cases leaks develope in the roofs.

Plants are put below the leaks, until maintenance has fixed the problem.
