    Wad-excursions

by catnl Written Apr 25, 2005

Wad-walking from point to point is not possible on Texel, but there are wad-excursions. The wad bottom that has fallen dry may seem barren, but it is crawling with life. During this nature excursion you will discover what takes place under your feet. Applications at EcoMare, tel. 0222-317741.
Between De Koog and De Waal lies the old polder, which is rich in birds, Waal and Burg, which is partially owned by the Vereniging Natuurmonumenten (Dutch Association for Nature Preservation). The unfertilised pastures of this part of the area are flooded in the Winter. If it does not freeze up, it makes it an ideal spot for all kinds of water birds. During frosty periods, Waal and Burg becomes the domain of the inhabitants of Texel; the shallow waters rapidly become suitable for ice-skaters.

Drijvers Vogelweid De Bol is situated near the windmill of Het Noorden and is also a low unfertilised grazing area. An interesting area for bird-watchers, which also houses special flora. Orchids and campions can be found in abundance.

De Schorren is a salt marsh area on the outside of the dyke on the Waddenzee, with characteristic salt-loving plants, which is flooded very rarely. The area is protected from the sea with little dams of posts and wicker.

    Texel

by catnl Written Apr 25, 2005

    1 of the 5 Waddenislands.
My kids an me have been to Oosterend on the island Texel some years ago. We stayed at an appartment on farmers ground, great!
Near to the North Sea, although it was february we enjoyed this stay very much.
Oosterend with it's characteristical architecture is photographer's delight.
It might be small but its complete with pubs, restaurants, a supermarket and a pancake house.

There are no hotelsbut it has a bungalowpark.
Most inhabitants are tied-in with the fishing industry; most ship-owners are living in the village.

    Shrimp boat

    by ingridf_nl Updated Jul 19, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Oudeshild harbour offers a couple of shrimp boat excursions.

The thing is, I just love being on a boat, so that fact that it was a shrimp boat (although I love shrimp) was not the main motivating factor.

The wind, rocking boat, and fresh air was all wonderful... and in addition, we got to see
seals laying in the sun on a sand dune, watched the whole trawling and shrimp sorting process, and saw a huge and wonderful trail of seagulls following the boat.

It was very funny to see the other people on the boat flocking around the cooked shrimp. It reminded me a bit of seagulls ... :P

    KEES BOONTJE TEXEL

A LEGEND: Kees Boon was an old beachcomber and on a stormy morning, end 19th Century he went out to the beach to find.....a shipwrecked sailor who was, oh wonder, still alive.
He took the poor man on his shoulders and went to his little hut.
There he looked after the man with great care who happened to have a flask with a lovely drink in his pocket. In combination with Kees' good care it seemed to work wonders because the sailor recovered and Kees too, loved the drink which was sort of ELIXIR, EAU DE VIE...
After some time the sailor could go on, back to where he was from: SWEDEN but as a token of THANKS he gave Kees the recipe of the drink.

The local inn keeper was willing to try to experiment a bit and see, he managed to create a fine drink....

Soon "Kees Boontje" was a very populair drink and it was available only in Kees' village.

In 1988 the recipe went to the WINE SHOP / LIQUOR SHOP de Wit and now EVERYONE CAN BUY this cordial.....and it is a nice thing to take home AS A SOUVENIR.............

    THE MARITIEM & JUTTERS MUSEUM...

MARITIME & BEACHCOMBING MUSEUM OUDESCHILD TEXEL

    The MARITIME & BEACHCOMBING MUSEUM.

The history of Texel is indissolubly connected with the sea.
From the early beginning the sea used to be friend and enemy: the sea gave food and income, but at the same time it was the sea threatening the land and taking the lives of fishermen and sailors.
In the Maritime & Beachcombing Museum one may see, hear, taste and experience how people handled the sea and all this supported by exhibitions, stories, activities and demonstrations that are entertaining and unforgettable: history brought to life!

The Museum is the Ideal Stranding for people of all ages.

In several buildings surrounding the open air exhibitions, the collection of the museum can be seen. All sorts of objects and paintings from the early days up to now. A lice-comb emerged from the Waddenzee, a beautiful copper-studded model of a ship, musket bullets retrieved from a fort, a wooden fishing boat dated 1894 and last but not least the gigantric and unique model of the TEXEL ROADS on which hundreds of models and thousands of sailors are to be seen.
A thematic view of the turbulent history of the island and its surrounding seas.

BEACH COMBING: when the westwind turns into storm the beachcomber will be out on the beach, looking for anything of interest.
Preferably at dawn or dusk, so that he himself can't be seen, because no one is allowed to leave the beach with jetsam! Beachcombing is prohibited and the beach-masteer is always on duty!!
But...the islanders have been beachcombing for centuries and there are juicy stories about their adventures.
COME AND LISTEN TO THE BEACHCOMBER!!

There is a shop and a restaurant!!
