    What to do.

Favorite thing: The village has a great shopping street, which is the only one there of such type, going along marina. The street is full of souvenir shops and small cafes and restaurants.
MY ADVICE: If you want to buy some souvenirs, go to Volendam. There they are much cheaper than in Amsterdam.

The general feel of the place

Favorite thing: While visiting Amsterdam I stayed a few miles down the road in the coastal town of Volendam, a peaceful escape from the bright lights. The cobbled streets and rustic shops give it a time warp feel, until you get to the modern market place.

    Hidden treasure - Hotel Spaander

by craigbooth Written Aug 12, 2005

Favorite thing: The Hotel Spaander makes a trip to Volendam worthwhile.
I haven't actually stayed in this hotel, but I have eaten there, and whenever I can I visit the lounge for coffee and appelgebak.
Volendam for me is rather too horribly over-developed for tourism, but this place is an island of real value.
The lounge is a stunning room, which feels like a ship's saloon.
The artwork which covers every square foot of the walls, and has been given by visitor artists since the end of the 19C is fantastic. It alone is worth the trip to Volendam.
Amazingly, it doesn't get too busy, so you really do feel special to have avoided the hordes outside.

Fondest memory: The sheer pleasure of sitting in Hotel Spaander's lounge

    View from marina

by Lalique Written Apr 18, 2003

Favorite thing: It was raining like hell that day, thus the pics look very gray and sad, but if you pick a real sunny and warm day, you'll enjoy this town to the fullest.
You can take a boat to go to island/peninsula, which name starts with "M", but I can't recollect now. Was told that it's not of a big deal ;)) but still is nice to see, and you can consider it as a small sea trip.

    What is Volendam?

by Lalique Updated Apr 18, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Volendam is a former small fishing village, which is now turned into tourist Mecca. It's about 20km away from Amsterdam and one can get there by a bus (#110), which stops near Central Station.
