Arriva Bus - Waterland Ticket

The pricing for the Waterland ticket on the Arriva bus has changed, it is now 9 euros, and for that price you can hop on and off of the Arriva bus for the entire day, which I believe is from around 6am to 12am. The Waterland ticket covers stops between Amsterdam and Edam. The transportation websites are a bit difficult and frustrating to navigate for non-natives, so it is best to ask the bus driver, they are very friendly and helpful. The buses are located on the north side of centraal station. So if you're at the side with the trams, go through the center of the station where the train platforms are located and out the back side of the station to the waterfront. From there, take the escalator up to the bus platform. You will buy the Waterland tickets from the bus driver, cash only. My friendly and helpful bus driver suggested a days itinerary which would begin with a stop in Monnickendam and a walk around the beautiful city. From Monnickendam you can either take a bus to Marken, or take the bus to Volendam where a ferry can take you to Marken for 8 euros round trip. The Volendam museum is worth a visit and is located at stop Zeestraat. This little museum really gives you a sense of day to day Voldenam life, and a great exhibition of the clothing and work in the region. The waterfront is lovely, but unfortunately capitalizes on kitche so there are numerous tacky souvenir shops. I suggest wandering the streets behind the waterfront and experiencing the distinct architecture and quiet life of Volendam. Always keep in mind that people live here, so be respectful. From Volendam you can take the bus located across the street from the Volendam museum to Edam - I suggest you get out at the bus station. Edam is a lovely little town with it's fair share of touristy places, but it is a place where you can stroll and take life a little easier. There is a cheese market on Wednesday's in season. The Edam museum is worth a visit, it is one of those places that seems suspended in time. One of the highlights of the museum is the floating cellar, and yes, it is actually floating in ground water and you are able to go into it and rock it back and forth as if you are on a boat. After a lovely visit in Edam, you can board the bus back to Amsterdam and perhaps if you have enough energy left, you can make a stop in Broek in Waterland, another quaint and quiet village. Enjoy the visit!

TRANSPORT TO VOLENDAM

A cheap way to get to Volendam is by the Bus. The Bus leaves from the Bus Station near Central Station. If you are standing facing the Station, then its the bus station to the right. Here you will find the Buses and signs of where they are going.

For good value BUY THE WATERLAND TICKET. It lasts you a whole day covering the Waterland area. You can get on and off the bus as much as you want, as long as you keep using the "Arriva" Bus company.

You buy the ticket from the Driver as you get on the Bus, and just show to each driver at your new destinations when boarding the Bus.
Cost in 2009 was 7euro FOR A TICKET FOR THE WHOLE DAY.
There are family passes available as well

Bus to Volendam and Marken

If you want to use bus, I think it is better go to Volendam first, then continue to Marken.
There is bus (no 108 or 110??) directly to Volendam from Central station.
From Volendam-Marken there is no direct bus, you have to transfer and change to another bus. Seems complicated, but it was very easy. Please ask the bus driver how to go to Marken from Volendam, he will tell you where to stop and wait for another bus (the bus driver is kind and helpful).
You can buy the ticket from the bus driver. You can select single or family (valid for 2 adult and 3 children). Using 1 day bus ticket is cheaper than buy single used.

One day bus ticket for family (Family-dagkaart) on Feb 2007 is 10 Eu.

There is a bus that you can take in Amsterdam, near the Central Station, that takes you to all these little cities, Volendam, Edam, etc. You can buy a ticket (inside the bus) that allows you to travel all day in this circuit, which is good if you want to see a lot of cities and not just stay in one all day.

Get closer to the sea

Volendam and Marken are neighbors on the IJsselmeer. They’re both quaint villages that are attractive and pleasant to walk through. The land route between these two towns is much longer than the sea route so there is a ferry in place to help out travelers. The thirty minute crossing may not get you there any faster but the experience will probably be more enjoyable than going by road.

Volendam

Take a bus from Amsterdam central bus station (nearby Amsterdam Ceentral railway station). I am not sure which number, but just ask some of bus drivers (they are all very kind and well informed). Since all the places around Volendam are the similar and the harbour cannot be seen from the bus, ask driver to tell you where to get out. After you finish walking tour through the Volendam, and eat some excellent seafood available there, you can take boat trip to Marken, similar but smaller place on the other side of the cost where you can take bus which goes directly to the Amsterdam central station (runs approx. every hour - last about 20,00).

There are frequent buses to Amsterdam from the bus station. The route takes you past some lovely canals, good photo opportunities!
The buses stop running past 12 I think, after then you will have to get a taxi
