  • Harbour

This is what I call the touristy area of Volendam. I imagine, that on a nice sunny Summer's day, it would be extremely busy. It was, cold, wet and very windy, so not many people. This area has some nice statues of Dutch people in traditional costume. They make good photo opportunities as well. It is also where the majority of Tourist shops are, and...

This is a tour town-but still has a lot of pizzazz. I enjoyed walking around and looking into the shops. We eat here and had some of the local raw cod, and other dishes some harder to chew than others. The shops really do cater to tourists and are pleasant people to talk to. Buy something

  • IJsselmeer views

At the edge of the harbour wall in Volendam are a few seats next to a mounted telescope. It says stop and watch. And for a coin insert you can view the horizon for a few minutes. Of course the day I was there there was nothing to see. I suspect thats not uncommon.

  • Volendam Museum

The museum in Volendam is a small building built on stilts at the edge of the main harbour. The stilts are there to protect the building from frequent flooding that occured before the Zuider Zee was cut off from the ocean in the early 20th century. Many buildings around the lake are on stilts although now the freshwater IJsselmeer lake has no tides...

  • Visit the Harbour

Talk a walk down along the dike in Volendam, this is where the big boats tie up and you can see some fine examples of the seamans dream. The boats shown look to be in perfect condition, as if not used, but I asked and was told they are used and were NOT museum exhibits. The area around the harbour is filled also with tourist restaurants and stores...

  • BACKSTREET DELI

We didn't have a lot of time in Volendam and as it was a lovely day we didn't want to waste inside a restaurant. We came across a little deli place on a side street off the main harbour area and got a snack there so we could eat it sitting on the harbour wall enjoying the view and soaking up the sunshine. In summer, a ferry connection between "Volendam" and the peninsula of "Marken" is available. On the other side of the Gouwzee lies a peninsula with yet another traditional fishing village. The pricing for the Waterland ticket on the Arriva bus has changed, it is now 9 euros, and for that price you can hop on and off of the Arriva bus for the entire day, which I believe is from around 6am to 12am. The Waterland ticket covers stops between Amsterdam and Edam. The transportation websites are a bit difficult and frustrating to navigate...
