Mostly a Tourist trap
Nice for a few hour visit
The premenade avenue and the bay of Volendam is such colorful and in movement on day time, but as sun starts to go down, the sky and the bay turns into a picturesque color ...Just have a walk or sip a coffee on one of the cafe's at the bay and enjoy the amazing view as ..:)more
If you are in Holland, do not forget to have your picture taken in the nationalattire. That is really nice. My Dutch friends invited to do it, and I must sayat first I didn't feel like doing it. However, back at home all my friends andrelatives appreciated those pictures as really nice gifts from Holland!more
This is what I call the touristy area of Volendam. I imagine, that on a nice sunny Summer's day, it would be extremely busy. It was, cold, wet and very windy, so not many people. This area has some nice statues of Dutch people in traditional costume. They make good photo opportunities as well. It is also where the majority of Tourist shops are, and...more
This is a tour town-but still has a lot of pizzazz. I enjoyed walking around and looking into the shops. We eat here and had some of the local raw cod, and other dishes some harder to chew than others. The shops really do cater to tourists and are pleasant people to talk to. Buy somethingmore
The museum in Volendam is a small building built on stilts at the edge of the main harbour. The stilts are there to protect the building from frequent flooding that occured before the Zuider Zee was cut off from the ocean in the early 20th century. Many buildings around the lake are on stilts although now the freshwater IJsselmeer lake has no tides...more
Talk a walk down along the dike in Volendam, this is where the big boats tie up and you can see some fine examples of the seamans dream. The boats shown look to be in perfect condition, as if not used, but I asked and was told they are used and were NOT museum exhibits. The area around the harbour is filled also with tourist restaurants and stores...more
Volendam is a small town near De IJsselmeer and is a very popular tourist destination with day trippers so you're bound to see bus loads of fellow travellers from all over the world.Volendam was an old traditional Dutch fishing village and much of the attraction is to come and sample seafoods such as salted herring and smoked eel. There are many...more

If you are staying in Volendam, and not with a group in a big tourist bus, allowsome time to have dinner in in a small cozy cafe in the city embankment. You can taste various dishes of local fish cuisine and also taste various typesof beer.It is especially nice to sit in a cafe in the evening when the majority oftourists have left the city? You can...more
A typical Dutch restaurant/pub/lunchroom. Just went in for a quick bite. It was good.If you make reservations, ask for a table overlooking the harbour. There's also a verandah around so if you're there in summer, it's a good option. Erwtensoep (peasoup) and 2 croquettes with bread. With 2 softdrinks, totalled 12 euro 45.more
We didn't have a lot of time in Volendam and as it was a lovely day we didn't want to waste inside a restaurant. We came across a little deli place on a side street off the main harbour area and got a snack there so we could eat it sitting on the harbour wall enjoying the view and soaking up the sunshine. Unfortunately I don't remember the name...more
In summer, a ferry connection between "Volendam" and the peninsula of "Marken" is available. On the other side of the Gouwzee lies a peninsula with yet another traditional fishing village. A visit to Marken is well worth it and the "Marken Express" ferry brings you there in about 30 minutes, making it an easy daytrip. Once on board you can buy some...more
The pricing for the Waterland ticket on the Arriva bus has changed, it is now 9 euros, and for that price you can hop on and off of the Arriva bus for the entire day, which I believe is from around 6am to 12am. The Waterland ticket covers stops between Amsterdam and Edam. The transportation websites are a bit difficult and frustrating to navigate...more
"Volendam" is not only a place of nostalgia, also a wonderful town for shopping. There are supermarkets on town area, but I advise you to check the souvenir shops on the walking arcade, such colorful and so many things to buy to bring back home .... As I was there several times of the year as it was summer and also snowy winter, the shops are open...more
I had checked prices of souvenirs in Amsterdam, and had decided to leave it until the last day to buy because of the high prices. I looked in the souvenir shops here, and found the prices to be lower. There is a great selection because of so many shops, and I found different to in Amsterdam. I collect Dolls from different countries, and this is...more
On New Year's eve 2001, a fire broke out in a bar in Volendam. About 12 people were killed (either during or some time after the fire). Nearly 200 people were injured. It was an enormous disaster and safety regulations were questioned. It even got to CNN. Read page here.It was even more tragic because all victims were in their late teens/early 20s....more

See Johnny_CA's page and decide for yourself if you want to look silly in what he calls 'the old garb'.
I won't. I refuse. I will not do it!

In the Volendam museum we just happened to catch a group of kindergarten children dressed in traditional Dutch costumes. What the occassion was I could not determine from the people in the museum, so we just enjoyed watching.
The Hotel Spaander makes a trip to Volendam worthwhile.I haven't actually stayed in this hotel, but I have eaten there, and whenever I can I visit the lounge for coffee and appelgebak.Volendam for me is rather too horribly over-developed for tourism, but this place is an island of real value. The lounge is a stunning room, which feels like a ship's...more
