Typical houses in the Zaanstreek

Favorite thing: The wooden houses of the Zaanstreek all have this green color. Green was, and still is, a color that lasts longer therefor it was cheaper to paint your house green and then wait longer to repaint. The Zaanstreek was not very rich, most of the people here were workmen in the industry.
Today the city council oblige people to paint the houses in Zaangreen. I think i like the idea of keeping your heritage.

The picture is het zaans bakkertje, at the Lagedijk 11a in Zaandijk.

Favorite thing: Throughout the centuries, the windmill has been the symbol of the Dutch fight against the water.

Fondest memory: Just enter to Zaanse Schans!

The Zaanse Schans is a reconstruction of a Zaans residential and working neighbourhood.

In this open-air museum with 20 wooden houses, mills and storehouses from the 17 & 18th centuries.

Favorite thing: Want to see how Holland used to be around the 19th century? Take a look at Zaandam and the Zaanse Schans! You can see the old green coloured houses here, all types of mills (molens we call them in Dutch) and some museums.

Favorite thing: Visit Edam, a real treasure on the IJsselmeer coast

Fondest memory: Edam is not only famous for its cheese, but also for its completely intact city centre. It's only small, so you can walk through it in an hour or so. There are many historical monuments, such as this draw bridge and the 'play tower' the carrillion tower on the background.
