    Zaanse Schans...

by Xinta Updated Jan 13, 2003

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The picturesque village of Zaanse Schans is situated near Zaadam. The village, which stands along the banks of the river Zaan, is an exact reproduction of the typical landscape of the polders of North Holland. The small rural centre consists of green-painted wooden houses and windmills dating back to the early centuries. From the carpark leading to this open-air museum, Visitors walk along the only street in the village discovering, along the way, various buildings housing small collections of local art and various types of craft and manufacturing activities. The seven mills built here are very interesting and some of them are still in working order: the De Hadel Mill, originally from Midwoud, the mill for producing De Huisman mustard, the De Gekroonde Poelenburg sawmill, the mill for manufacturing colors De Kat, the De Zoeker and De Bonte Hen oil mills and the De Windhond mill.
