Things to Do

Do the harbour walk

Do the harbour walk, Blokzijl

sandravdp Says:  Walk around the harbour and take a look at the water system here. The system is used to get boats from a higher to a lower tide.

The sluice of Blokzijl

The sluice of Blokzijl, Blokzijl

martin_nl Says:  Blokzijl is known around the country for its sluice. Many tourists each summer use the sluice to get around the Provincie of Overijssel. The sluice has a special character because of the bridge crossing it and the restaurants and hotel next to it.

The Blokzijl lighthouse

The Blokzijl lighthouse, Blokzijl

martin_nl Says:  Next to the harbour and the sluice you will find this lighthouse on a piece of green grass. It is not an actual lighthouse, but it symbolises the lighthouse Blokzijl doesn't have. It looks pretty cool anyway in my opinion and you can even reach the top without climbing all...

Living monument

Living monument, Blokzijl

martin_nl Says:  The Blokzijl Levend Monument is also situated next to the bridge, behind the monument of Kaatje. I dón't know what the meaning of this monument is, but I'll try to find out....so for now only a picture.

Church of Blokzijl

Church of Blokzijl, Blokzijl

martin_nl Says:  This is the church of Blokzijl. It is located on a nice little and quiet square. Notice the little sign in front of the church, next to the car... it announces when the next Mass is.

The harbour of Blokzijl

The harbour of Blokzijl, Blokzijl

martin_nl Says:  Strolling around the harbour on a sunny day is great. You can look at all the boats and the people on them. There are a few café's along the shore where you can relax a bit with a cold beer and enjoy the view. Blokzijl is a popular place in summer, so the harbour is very...

Bridge over the sluice

Bridge over the sluice, Blokzijl

martin_nl Says:  The bridge over the sluice is the only way to get from one side of the town to the other side. Everytime the water in the sluice adjusts to the directio of which the boats go to the bridge closes. First the bridge opens and boats get out of the sluice. Then the bridge closes...

Monument of Kaatje

Monument of Kaatje, Blokzijl

martin_nl Says:  Kaatje is the most famous person in the history of Blokzijl. She used to be the owner of the tavern that now houses the restaurant Kaatje bij de Sluis.

Restaurant / Cafe Sluiszicht: Eating while looking out over the water, Blokzijl

sandravdp Says:  The restaurant has nice seats at the backside. Here you can look out over the water while you're eating & drinking. I liked the croquettes on bread, but they have many moe local specialties.

Kaatje bij de Sluis: Excellent culinary food

Kaatje bij de Sluis: Excellent culinary food, Blokzijl

martin_nl Says:  Kaatje bij de Sluis is one of the best restaurants in the Netherlands. It even has a Michelin Star!! I have never eaten here, but I did work here one time, to experience what it is like to work in such a restaurant. It was a nice experience, but I tink I just prefer to eat...

Caf Sluiszicht

During the summer Café Sluiszicht is busy all day. During the day many tourists visit the café because of its nice location next to the sluice or as a stopover on a bicycle trip. There is also a terrace which overlooks the sluice and the harbour.
In the evening you will also find many locals enjoying a beer or another drink in the place.
You can also go here for something to eat, since they have a menu too.

Transportation

Car parking tip

Car parking tip, Blokzijl

sandravdp Says:  When you go to Blokzijl, please use the big free parking spot outside the village before entering the village. From the parking place it's just a small walk to the village centre. The reason is: Blokzijl itself doesn't have a lot of parking space & there are some very small...

Train

Train, Blokzijl

martin_nl Says:  Getting to Blokzijl is quite difficult by public transportation. You have to go by train to Steenwijk from where you will have to take a special bus. I never took this little bus, but the times are quite inconvenient. It is better to take the train taxi (€3,75) and be...

Supermarket and bakery: Blokzijler Brok

Supermarket and bakery: Blokzijler Brok, Blokzijl

martin_nl Says:   So what to buy in a city as small as Blokzijl? You'd think there is nothing really, but there is. Make sure to get your hands on some Blokzijler Brok. It famous around the whole area and if I'm not mistaken only for sale in Blokzijl, hence the name ;-)Blokzijler Brok...

The electric 20.00 bbq worked very well!!

I happen to know Beatrijs who lives in Blokzijl and works in the Hotel Kaatje bij de Sluis. She lives opposite the hotel and has a nice garden next to the sluice and the bridge. She invited me and Kim over for a bbq and it was great fun!!!
There are many flies though, well now much less, since I think we killed about a 1,000 of them while bbq'ing ;-)

Kim and me in Weerribben National Park

Blokzijl is only a short distance away from the Weerribben National Park. The NP is best explored by canoe. Visit my Kalenberg page, which is soon to come, to read more.
