The "Roombeek" area of Enschede was hit hard by the fireworks disaster of May 13, 2000. On this bright and sunny saturday 22 people were killed and almost 1000 were wounded, when a fireworks depot exploded. The blast and the fires thereafter destroyed many houses and businesses.

From my hometown Hengelo the huge explosion sounded like there was an aircraft incident on the Twente Airport. The huge smoke stack became visible up to 100 km from the site.
