Fred & Douwe is a modern city lounge that serves brunches, lunches and dinners.
Also good for an in between stopover for a drink and a snack.
2010 Update: The placed went out of business at the end of the year. From January 2011 the business will be taken over and change its name.

Café het Bolwerk is the most characteristic Enschede café.
It was the location where (song)writer Willem Wilmink used to go to.
A wooden floor, persian carpets and more; what more do you want in a bar?
Ma-Sa: 11AM - 2AM
Su: 2PM - 2AM
Favorite Dish: A cup of coffee at the reading table.
Sam Sam started as a small restaurant in one of the smaller inner Enschede streets.
It was a place for a first date dinner, wher both parties payed at a fifty-fifty basis; hence the Dutch name: Sam-Sam.
After the relocation to the Old Market square the restaurant grew in popularity and won the price for best restaurant during the Proefeet festivals several times.
Needless to say that I recommend a visit.

Enschede attracts many visitors from neighbouring Germany just for having a bite of fresh fish.
No wonder there are some fish stands in the center. Also at the daymarket on Saturdays the fish section is heavily visited.
Favorite Dish: Raw herring.
Restaurant Tien is part of the Parclocation "De Jaargetijden".
Anything from small parties to big gala's can be organised here.
The special of the restaurant is the Tasters Menu; 10 items in a 5 course menu.

Het Kostershoes dates from 1864. It was the former verger house of the local Baptsts church.

Atrium is a no nonsense food bar, with great 3 course meals under 20 Euro's.
The café was started in 1977 and at that time still had a billiards table and the menu written on the wall. Atrium introduced Spare Ribs, a menu item that;s still top of the bill.
Mo-Th: 5PM - 10PM
Fr-Sa: 5PM - 11PM
Su: 5PM - 9PM
Favorite Dish: Spare Ribs!
We chose De Kater Café-Brasserie, simply because the most people were sitting there so we reckoned it should be good. They had a dinner menu and a fingerfood (tapas) menu so we decided to have our dinner with two starters.
It was just nice enough to sit outside under the huge parasols. The service was nice, and the view towards the church the square (see main page photo) was very agreable too.
Favorite Dish: The shrimp Pil Pil (VERY buttery, garlicky, peppery) was very very nice with French bread and some extra fries. The Luxe Viswrap (wrap with shrimps and smoked salmon and salad) was HUGE! It was hardly a wrap, in fact the wrap was more of an afterthought.
The paprika soup (Ali Pasja) was nice but did not really have the promised Indian taste. A very big tartar of smoked salmon sat on a bed of mixed salad. I found that the strong dressing on the tartar did kill the more delicate taste of the salmon but I still ate it with pleasure.
Accompanied with 3 glasses of rosé wine, 2 softdrinks and 2 coffees, the bill amounted to 51 euro (70 USD) for 2 persons.
There is more than one appropriate theme for Délifrance: Breakfast, French, Bakery, Coffeehouse, Deli and Takeaway.
Délifrance (with restaurants in among others The Netherlands and Belgium) has a central location in downtown Enschede. Within walking distance from all the shops and bars, this lunchroom (let's call it that) is set in a pedestrianised part of town.
The recently refurbished/renovated interior breathes quietness and takes you away from the shopping crowds.
Favorite Dish: Freshly baked cheese croissants
Long French toast (it claims to be 28cm long!) with cheese, mozarella, Brie, pesto and tomatoes...yummy...
This cosy bistro-like restaurant has a variety of dishes and side dishes. Small appetite or really hungry, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, supper: you name it, Sam-sam serves it. The Menu of the Day is EUR5.70 (vegetarian option possible); there is a day-by-day overview per week.
The menu indicates which courses can be served quickly and which take more time. Let the waiter know if you are in a hurry, then they will make an effort to serve your courses quicker.
The new terrace overlooking the Oude Markt is great, especially on a warm summer night. If you are sitting inside however, you have the option to sit at the reading table: a large table with a wide choice of newspapers and different types of magazines.
Favorite Dish: Award winning menu
In 2003, Sam-sam won the "ProefEet": an outdoor eating and drinking festival on the Oude Markt of Enschede. The local restaurants/bistros present themselves with original dishes for the audience to taste and rate. Among Sam-sam's winning dishes is the Bologna, spaghetti pie filled with goat's cheese, gruyere, pesto, tomato and spaghetti of course. Another dish I can recommend is Ko-Shamo, an oven dish 'gratin' of chicken fillet, sweet potatoes, pieces of bacon and various mushrooms like shii-take, oyster mushrooms and white button mushrooms.
Ever experienced the following? You go out for dinner, looking at the menu you see that in addition to starters and main courses there is a list of yummy looking desserts. You decide to skip the starters in order to leave some space for dessert - but once the main course is finished you are so stuffed that sadly you have to leave dessert for 'next time'...
Sam-sam has the solution!! Rather than the average desserts that are stomach-filling in itself (no main courses needed...), they serve mini-desserts. Mini-tiramisu, mini-ice cream, ... Great for kids as well as grown-ups!
Besides desserts, Sam-sam also has a wide choices of coffees, teas (pure tea, not from a pre-packed box!) and liquours.
A very special restaurant indeed! The personnel of De Huifkar are people with a mental handicap. Under the watching eye of a coach, they take your order, prepare the food, assist you at the buffet - and they do it all with true dedication. It might take a wee while longer to get your food, but it is all worth the while. Just look at the pride in their eyes when you make them a compliment... And oh, yeah: the food is simply gorgeous! A la carte, the menu of the day, vegetarian dishes... Not a problem at De Huifkar!
Opening hours: Monday-Friday 5pm (kitchen open till 8pm); Sat/Sun closed.
Favorite Dish: All dishes are yummy, but leave some space for an even yummier dessert!
SMAAK is called a candy store for adults.
In fact it's a modern place where you can enjoy fresh pasta's, tapa's, salads and much more.
Great wine selection too.
Eating is not limited to the shop, you can take away the goodies as well.
Favorite Dish: Pastries
