    Oldenzaal

    by sim1 Written Jan 17, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Favorite thing:
Oldenzaal is the town where I used to live for the past 10 years. It is in the eastern part of Holland close to the German border. This region is called Twente.
This region is quite unknown to the tourists, but it is lovely here. Not the first thing that comes to mind maybe of places to visit when you go to Holland, but absolutely worth while.

Oldenzaal is very easy to find... just take the highway A1 that runs all the way from Amsterdam to Moskow. Just before you reach the German border turn right and visit this beautiful little town! Hahaha, okay, I might be a little biased in my opinion about Oldenzaal :-)) But I enjoyed living here a lot. As a tourist not a must see, but a nice stop on the way.

    Development Twente

by Tetreus Written Mar 6, 2006

Favorite thing: The three large cities of Twente are Enschede, Hengelo and Almelo, which were all developed in the 19th century. Like almost every other place in Twente, a textile industry was developed on the basis of the local industriousness, and the arrival of the railways made these three cities the economic axis of Twente. In Hengelo, machine construction dominated. The Twente textile industry now belongs to the past.

Twente has an airport, Enschede Airport Twente, and halfway between Hengelo and Enschede is the Universiteit Twente.

    Landscape Twente

by Tetreus Written Mar 6, 2006

Favorite thing: Outside the large cities, Twente is a region with important nature areas such as the Lutterzand on the meandering Dinkel. It is bisected from north to south by a range of hills, where the highest point is the Tankerberg near Oldenzaal. Scenic old towns are found at Ootmarsum and to a lesser degree Oldenzaal, which has an important Roman church. Eight Twentse places have obtained city rights: Almelo, Enschede, Oldenzaal, Ootmarsum, Goor, Rijssen, Diepenheim en Delden.

Geologically Twente is one of the most interesting areas of the Netherlands. It has strata from various periods in a very small area. There is an open stone quarry at Losser, while salt production is performed at Hengelo and Boekelo

    Geography Salland

by Tetreus Written Mar 6, 2006

Favorite thing: Salland is bound to the west by the provincial border with Gelderland, which is partly formed by river IJssel; to the north by the Meppelerdiep stream and the provincial border with Drente, which partly consists of the Reest stream; to the east by the borders with the German state of Lower Saxony and the eastern Overijssel region of Twente; and to the south by the border with the Gelderland region of Achterhoek, part of which is formed by the Schipbeek stream.

Geologically, most of Salland's landscape consists of a lowland covered with river sediment. To the east, large moors have been drained to provide pastures. These moors, together with the hilly Holterberg region, were the natural border with Twente. On the Holterberg, stretches of the originally vast heathland have been preserved. In the northwest, reclaimed boglands used for peat digging have resulted in low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding, pre-1932 (in that year, the Zuiderzee was closed off from the North Sea to become the IJsselmeer lake).

Three of Overijssel's major cities, Deventer, Kampen and the province's capital, Zwolle, lie within Salland, but as their citizens not always identify with being Sallanders, the region's "capital" is generally considered to be Raalte. Other places of import include Ommen and Hardenberg.

Salland is a low-lying area dominated by a number of rivers and streams, which have deposited rich layers of river clay. The most important of these waterways is of course river IJssel; others include the Zwarte Water and (Overijsselse) Vecht rivers; the Regge stream, which flows through Twente to spend its last few kilometers in Salland before ending in the Vecht near Ommen; the Schipbeek stream; and the Soestwetering stream, which merges with a number of lesser streams near Zwolle to form river Zwarte Water.

Salland and the boundary with Twente

by Tetreus Written Mar 6, 2006

Favorite thing: Intra-Overijssel municipal reforms of the early twenty-first century have somewhat blurred the boundary between Salland and Twente, as municipalities historically associated with Salland have merged with Twente municipalities (and now form part of the Twente Region as defined by the Dutch government). Specifically, this regards Holten (now part of the Rijssen-Holten municipality) and Den Ham (now part of the Twenterand municipality). Industrial and commercial ties with Twente and its location east of the Holterberg hill ridge caused the municipality of Hellendoorn to switch association earlier in the twentieth century.

    A BIT ABOUT GIETHOORN

by LoriPori Written Jun 15, 2015

Favorite thing: Thursday, May 21, 2015
This day was set aside to spend with Hans' childhood friends - Paul - Bart - Oga. They met us at the Landal Park and together we went to Oga's house for lunch and to decide what we wanted to do that afternoon. It was suggested to go to GIETHOORN and I loved this idea, as Hans and I haven't been there in years.
A village in the Province of Overijssel, Giethoorn became famous when Dutch film maker, Bert Haanstra made his comedy film "FanFare" there in 1958.
In the old part of the village, there are no roads. All transport is done by water over one of the many canals. Thus Giethoorn, is known as the "Venice of the North" and it has over 180 bridges. In the winter Giethoorn is a very popular destination for ice skaters.
Tourism has had a huge influence on this tiny village. Years ago, I think well over 20, Hans and I visited here and it was so peaceful and quiet. Today, there are hordes of tourists, even bus tours, come here. Giethoorn is very popular among Chinese tourists, with app. 200,000 Chinese tourists every year.
It's so commercial now with boat tours and many restaurants

    Visit the hanseatic cities

by carolineraat Written Sep 17, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The hansa was a medieval league of trading cities in northern Europe. Overijssel has many of them, that can be visited.

Fondest memory: Strolling through the medieval cobble stoned streets, watching the old gables.
