This is an old earthen fortification, usually with 4,5 or 6 halfbastions.
A bastion usually has 5 sides, this rare fortification has 4 half-bastions.
In 1597, Prince Maurits succeeded in freeing the region from the Spanish during the 80-year war. This fortification was built to defend the region from the Spanish. These Spanish soldiers were supported by the bishop of Münster, Bernard van Galen or Bommen Beren.
The fortification was difficult to take because it was protected by marshes and protected the trading route between Deventer and Münsterland in Germany.
Oak and juniper berries grow in the earthen walls.

The Oostendorper watermill was built in 1548. It's a double waterwheel. On the right bank is the corn mill with two wheels and on the left bank an oil mill with one wheel. This combination makes the Oostendorper mill quite unique.
After devastation in the Eight Year War, the mill was rebuilt in 1634. In 1946, the mill was completely washed away by high water and restored in 1950. Since 1946, the mill is owned by the town Haaksbergen.
It was again restored in 198701988.
In 1987 an association was erected which set itself as a goal to "keep the mill and its function in the original state and to promote it".
The association organises tours and demonstations where you can see how corn is grinded and oil is made.
The watermill is open wednesdays and saturdays from 14-17 hrs.
