    Wilhelminaboom - Hengelo
    2 more images

Favorite thing: The Wilhelminaboom is a tree dedicated to former Queen Wilhelmina when she was in power for 50 years in 1948. New trees were planted after renovations of the station square in 1987 and 2012. The tree originally stood on a small traffic island, when all traffic was allowed to used the busy road in front of the station. The casted gate around the tree has been moved for a while to another location in the park opposite the location of the Former Gerardus Marjella hospital. From 2012 the tree more or less is back at its original location.

    "Badgasten" art

    by pieter_jan_v Written Jul 10, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    4 more images

Favorite thing: The "Badgasten" are 5 statues of bears sculpted by Marjolein Mandersloot. The statues were revealed mid-2012 and placed on the Market square after much and long debates. The square was a troubled area, because every upgrade to make it attractive; turned into the contrary. The 5 bears costed a good 450.000 Euro's, a waste of money according to many. In fact the sum was available for a decade before this design was chosen out of 50 proposals. Hengelo has no relation with bears whatsoever; it is the following attempt to bring friendlyness to the market square. The sculpter had intended to place the bears around the waterbasin; but that was mis-information, because there is no basin at all at the square. So, to compensate that, she quickly introduced big blue aluminium waterdrops around the bears. How much bading they can do is the question.

    Fondest memory: Bading Bears

Monument for the sexual abused child
    2 more images

Favorite thing: The monument for the sexual abused child is made by Frans Houben, an artist who was abused himself. The monument is ment for all abused children and according to the artist it symbolises the protecting role the church should have, especial towards children.

The monument is a glass display of two playing children, protected by the Madonna.

It is located at the right front of the Onze Lieve Vrouwe church.

    Monday Morning Disassembly
    1 more image

Favorite thing: As well as hosting a twice weekly market (Wednesday and Saturday) the town's market place is used for occasional events including live music and the annual cycle race.

Having only visited on a Sunday night/Monday morning I never caught either the market or any of the events but saw the aftermath of something that must have taken place on a July Saturday - looks to me like it was the "Lipton's Iced Tea Festival" (Pic 2)!!

    St. Lambertus
    1 more image

Favorite thing: The St. Lambertus Basilic was build in 1890, but the catholic community was already 100 years older. Services started in a barn-church around 1800.

The big building withstood many World War II bombardments and was lucky to servive un unexploded shell that crashed through the roof.

Inside the Celebration Altar is the central heart in the church. Three more altars are present: the Hogh Altar by Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg and the Maria Altar and the Family Altar.

The three stain glass main windows form a connection from the Old to the New Testament.

    Wind vanes

    by pieter_jan_v Updated Oct 7, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Brinktoren wind vane (still with LEDs!)

Favorite thing: The Brinktower wind vane has the form of a little boy making a long nose. It's the visualisation of the so called "Hengeler Weend". This term is difficult to translate; "hot air" comes close.

Furthermore The Brinktower was known for its high-tech digital clock with thousands of LEDs. From the beginning there was trouble. Even in the design phase the right colour of the LEDs was an issue and when constructed and placed, it turned out the recommended colour by the supplier would have given a better readout. Than technical failures followed, giving different readouts on the four sides up to complete failure of parts of the display. Rain water got in and the "who is responsable" question arose. After much debat the top was taken off in 2007 and all there is left is an open frame work (another historical piece of "Hengeler Weend").

On the City Hall tower there is an even bigger wind vane with the name "Levensgang" (the circle of life).
East: Child playing with a ball
    South: Mother with child
    West: Old man
    North: The dead

    Police Headquarters

Favorite thing: The policeforce is moved to a new location. It is just a few hundred meters from the previous spot at the Marskant.

The new BLUE building replaces the former RABO bank offices.

The prison cells were tested by volunteers.
