During the summer month the Local Tourist Office (VVV-Hengelo) and the Historical Museum (Oald Hengel) organize a historical city walk and climbing of the City Hall tower.
Wednesdays at 1.45PM at from the museum at Beekstraat 51.
The City Hall dates from 1963 and has Italian and Scandinavian influences. Rumour says that the tower is build at the wrong side of the building, because the blueprints layed upside down at the construction.
The inside of the tower is painted by artist Piet Verberne with characters from local stories.
Next view is towards the city of Enschede.
Closeby you see the City Hall square and the Lambertus church (one of the few old buildings in the city not destroyed by the WWII bombings).
Farther away you see the new parking garage and the construction works for the new library.
At the horizon you see some buildings of the Twente Technical University.
From the platform underneath the carillion bells you have a wonderful view over the city (and an occasional ringing on top!)
I guide you clockwards and start with the main Hengelo crossing: Thiemsbrug.
From left to right for you to discover:
Star Hotel
RABO Theater
The weekly street market
The Train Station
The Telgen Building
The Brink Tower
V & D Department store
Cinema
Looking East to the town of Oldenzaal.
Closeby you see the City Hall extension followed by the Thiemsbrug parking garage.
The Oldenzaalsestraat was renovated completely in 2004.
Here we are over the Power Plant of Nijmegen. The stack is 550 feet high,so top of the clouds is 500 feet. I used this picture also as a X-Mas card.
