The Elsbeek is a small stream running through the Driene part of Hengelo.
When the Groot Driene suburb was created the old stream was transformed is straight dull ditches, In 2011 and 2012 the Elsbeek and the Swavert pool were renovated and transformed back to a stream with a variety of plants along its sides.
In yhe old town a part of the stream ws almost invisible and hidden. Here, obstacles were removed and the stream was market at some street crossing.
It's nice to walk along the Elsbeek, especial the part were it runs outside the side through farmland and forest.
The surplus water of the Elsbeek is fed South wards via a canal at the Hengelo city limits to new natural water purification ponds near the Twente canal. Also an area for a nice walk.
In 2013 the World Record walking route was created in the Hengelo city center by a group of Hengelo shopkeepers. 21 Atletics Word Records are being shown at points in the route.
A route map is available at 21 Hengelo shops.
Some of the records like the 5000 meters running by Kenenisa Bekele are set at the annual Hengelo FBK games, hold at the end of May/beginning of June.
The route will only be maintained from one week in advance of the FBK games through the games weekend.
The BAM Festival is a free annual cultural open air festival, that started in 2008.
In 2007 Matthijs Rolleman took the initiative to organise a cultural festival in the neglected Prins Bernhard park. A year later "BernArt en Music" (short: BAM!) was born and a became a huge succes from the beginning. It's a typical Hengelo event with activities for everybody, from children to their grandparents.
Live music performances are the main ingredient, but there are many activities around the stages. Caro Emerald performed here just before her career started.
The event takes place in the month of May (check the website).
The Piet Blom museum opened in February 2013, when the Hengelo Kasbah city quarter was 40 years and was declared a monument. Piet Blom was an architect and one of his city suburb designs has been build at Hengelo and it's called The Kasbah. It was a different concept with family houses being build elevated over a common area, intended for shops, parking and more. Most houses have terrasses with big gardens. Another well known design of him are the Rotterdam Kubical houses.
The museum is an initiative of the Kasbah residents and is housed in the former porter house, a space of 100 square meters.
Mo-Fr: Closed (possibly open after reservation by phone).
Sa-Su: 1PM - 5PM
Hengelo has a virtual museum: The Museum for Contemporary Hengelo Art with works of more than 50 Hengelo visual artists, who have their own virtual halls.
MHHK was created by artist and designer Ricardo Liong-A-Kong.
The MHHK website has been taken over by the Hengelo municipality in 2005 Hengelo, Ricardo Liong-A-Kong was assigned as curator.
If you happen to be changing trains here at Hengelo and have an odd half-hour or so then the Akropolis is well worth a visit. Unlike it's Athens counterpart the local variation is simply a pleasant little Greek restaurant on the station plaza where you are more than welcome to stop off for a beer while waiting for your train.
They put a few tables outside when the sun's out from which you can see your train arriving (and then departing again as you decide to have one more beer and catch the next one).
The food looked quite good as well and I was tempted to miss the next train too LOL ;)
From July 2006 the HEIM Museum is at a new location in the former Wilhelminaschool at the Industriestraat.
You will find 100 years of local industrial history here. Clothing industry, Stork and Heemaf and many more.
Tu-Fr: 11AM - 5PM
Sa-Su: 2PM - 5PM
Entrance: Euro 7.00
Visit the Lambooyhuis. It was the house one of the COBRA founders -Theo Wolvencamp- lived.
Now it's an art gallery opened from Thursday through Sunday from 2 to 6 PM.
It is one of the oldest houses in Hengelo, in fact an old city farnhouse. It is one of the downtown houses that surviver World War II. The foundations are made of Bentheimer stones originating from old gravestones and the "Huis Hengelo" foundations.
Thiemsbrug is the main midtown road crossing. In 2003/2004 a major (re)construction toke place; replacement of sewers, construction of bus lanes and more.
Also some major roads to the the town center are overhauled.
Visit the Historical Museum. It's a small but interesting place.
Tu/Fr: 10AM - 5PM
Sa/Su: 2PM - 5PM
Entrance: Euro 2.00
Twice a year, around Queensday and in early Fall (september) the fair returns to the Hengelo center.
The street market is moved and the fair works are in full swing for five days.
Visit the Kasbah if you like modern architecture. This cityblock is totally different from the traditional Dutch houses and was inspired by North African building practice.
The City Hall dates from 1963 and has Scandinavian and Italian influences. The outer gates along the main staircase were constructed by the local Stork company.
As in most towns, mostly you are unaware of all the art that is around.
This Midwinterhoorn statue by Jan van Eijl is placed on the City Hall Tower.
