    The oldest house??

    by pieter_jan_v Updated Nov 28, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Visit the Lambooyhuis. It was the house one of the COBRA founders -Theo Wolvencamp- lived.

Now it's an art gallery opened from Thursday through Sunday from 2 to 6 PM.

It is one of the oldest houses in Hengelo, in fact an old city farnhouse. It is one of the downtown houses that surviver World War II. The foundations are made of Bentheimer stones originating from old gravestones and the "Huis Hengelo" foundations.

    Waterstaatskerk

    by pieter_jan_v Written Apr 25, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Waterstaatskerk was build in 1840 as a church by engineers of the Dutch Waterstaat Ministery. The Hengelo building was one of several being constructed from 1824 till 1875. The involvement of the Dutch government was necessary due to a conflict about the ownership of former Catholic churches by the Reformed groups.

The building was used as a church till 1976 and was vacated for the period thereafter.

In 1990 and 1991 a restoration took place and the building is now used by the music school; the building is a National monument.

    Visit The Akropolis!

by johngayton Written Aug 19, 2010

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you happen to be changing trains here at Hengelo and have an odd half-hour or so then the Akropolis is well worth a visit. Unlike it's Athens counterpart the local variation is simply a pleasant little Greek restaurant on the station plaza where you are more than welcome to stop off for a beer while waiting for your train.

They put a few tables outside when the sun's out from which you can see your train arriving (and then departing again as you decide to have one more beer and catch the next one).

The food looked quite good as well and I was tempted to miss the next train too LOL ;)

The Kermis (Fair) has challenging attractions for adults, but just as many for the children.

The fair is being held twice a year; at the end of May and in September.

So, a great opportunity to get that special candy.

Another well known design of him are the Rotterdam Cubical houses.

    by pieter_jan_v Updated May 25, 2013

The BAM Festival is a free annual cultural open air festival, that started in 2008.

In 2007 Matthijs Rolleman took the initiative to organise a cultural festival in the neglected Prins Bernhard park. A year later "BernArt en Music" (short: BAM!) was born and a became a huge succes from the beginning. It's a typical Hengelo event with activities for everybody, from children to their grandparents.

Live music performances are the main ingredient, but there are many activities around the stages. Caro Emerald performed here just before her career started.

The event takes place in the month of May (check the website).
