Taman Indonesia is a delightful off the beaten path find. An old traditional farm houses on its grounds an oasis of Asian birds and animals.
It's a perfect half day outing for smaller kids. We spent 2.5 hours there in the park enjoying the many beautiful birds, otters, and other Indonesian/Asian livestock. At some point we were drawn towards live gamelan music and I was invited to join in and play and sing.
Entering the shop/canteen (the owner definitely does not want to 'be' a restaurant) we could not help smelling the lovely food odours. A group had organised a meal there, cooked by the young owner. We bought some Indonesian snacks and drinks and browsed the shop.

    Entrance fee 2008: 5 euro

After your visit to the animal park you can have refreshments inside the farm. Once inside you feel like being in an Asian market with lots of little Asian souvenirs to browse, or enjoy a drink and something to eat.
The owner tells me he really does not want to be a restaurant but if you are with a group and have made reservations, he can cook you an authentic Nasi Rames (white rice with various side dishes) or a Soto Ayam (a well filled Indonesian chicken soup).
When we came inside, delicious smells of Indonesian food greeted us. So we really had to have some snacks!

Favorite Dish: Lemper is a little roll made of sticky rice with a sweetish chicken mixture inside. It is served very hot and costs 2,50 euro.
Syrup Susu is a pink lemonade that my friend says tastes of soap but I like it! It's 1,50 euro.
There are also various savoury pastries and the famous layered 'spekkoek' cake, at 2 euro per portion.
Besides that various tropical fruit drinks, Indonesian beer, coffee tubruk and ordinary soft drinks and teas.

    Bus stop in Kallenkote

33 minutes past every hour there's a direct bus (14 minute ride) from the train station in Steenwijk. The first possibility is 7.33 am and the last is 18.33 pm, line 235, direction Borger.
Last bus back to Steenwijk is 19.16 pm and they run every hour.
Note: don't take a bus at another time than 33 past every hour, because that trip will not only cost you 3 times as much, the ride also takes about 45 minutes!
