Easter...painting the eggs !

by Tetreus

A local custom in my family but also in lots of other Dutch families is painting the eggs at Easter. You have to use nice colours...but you can also make faces of the eggs. After you've painted the eggs....at Easterday ....we do a compition.Throwing the eggs in the air...and than you have to catch the egg of your partner. What a mess !!

dialect

by Tetreus

The local dialect is known as Twents, a dialect of Low German, which together with Limburgs is one of the two regional languages of the Netherlands. Twents is spoken in all parts of Twente, but varies in each village. The Van Deinse Instituut is involved in researching the past and present of Twente. It is located in Enschede and studies the regional culture, folk knowledge, language, cultural history and landscape of Twente. It also collects, maintains, studies and displays an extensive collection of material from the history of Twente.

Folklore

by Tetreus

Many traditional cultural practices have been preserved in Twente, such as blowing the mid-winter horn and the stoking of Easter fires. The Twents anthem praises these practices, together with the textile industriousness and the society. An extravagant carnival is celebrated in Oldenzaal, which like the most of Twente is Roman-catholic

Ballooning in Oldenzaal

by sim1

Every year in August there is a ballooning festival in Oldenzaal. This event is held in park 'The Hulsbeek'. 35 balloons are present on this event. Lots of ordinary ones, but also some beautiful special shape balloons. It is not the biggest ballooning festival in the world, but it is fun! I have heard about festivals where there are 700 balloons! Wow, that would be awesome to see! Maybe I will see that myself one day, but in the mean time I am quite happy watching 35 of them.My most favourite part of the festival is the Nightglow. I used to go almost every year.At the nightglow, the balloons look so beautiful when the torches light them up. It is a show in which the balloons play the main part. They start to "glow" on the beat of the music and when the torches stop it is pitch black again. And not only the balloons glow to the music, there is also fireworks that makes the whole event even...

Easter fires

by tompt

Many small villages have a traditional Easter fire on Easter sunday or Easter monday evening. Most villages start building the stake of wood and branches on saturday. And depending on the tradition the stake is lit just after sunset on Easter sunday or monday. Some villages have special happening around the fire others only have the fire.

Carnival in Oldenzaal

by sim1

Carnival : Wow, the whole town turns into one big party during the carnival. And that is not for just one day, it starts on a Thursday and goes on until the next Tuesday. Everyone wears silly clothes, and goes to the pub or anywhere else where there is a party. In Oldenzaal there is a big parade on the Sunday. About a 100.000 people visit our little town and help us celebrate. On the Monday there is the childrens parade and on Tuesday evening they close the carnival celebrations on the town square with 'bokverbranden'. It is a tradition that varies from town to town, but in Oldenzaal they burn a goat of wood and have beautiful fireworks after that.Carnival is not celebrated all over the Province. Actually the biggest celebrations in the Province of Overijssel are in Oldenzaal.
