Since the Netherland's smoking ban many of the traditional "Brown Cafes" have lost a lot of their character, and characters. There are still a few scattered around tho' where smoking is still allowed and the one I discovered here in Oldenzaal is a true gem of its genre.
This is a friendly one-room bar complete with pool table and big TV which I discovered whilst wandering looking for somewhere quietish to watch one of the football World Cup games. It wasn't a game that Holland were playing in but the bar crowd were still actively involved in the serious business of beer drinking, smoking and spectating.
Every so often a round of shots would appear from the landlord's personal bottle and at half-time out came the fricadelles.
Fun pub but far too intimate for indoor pics by a stranger and so here's a fuzzy one from outside after the game.

As a "Bierlokaal" De Engel has everything that a perfect pub should have, including of course lots of beer - 15 on tap and another 25 or so in bottles. Situated on the corner of the market square its terrace, heated in the evenings, is ideal for watching the world (ie the pretty women) go by whilst inside the characterful bar area, with its gleaming fonts and drinker's paraphenalia as decor, is buzzy and sociable - it even has a smoking room!
Service is typically laid-back Dutch, and friendly with it, and not being in Amsterdam the prices are more than reasonable. As befits a proper beerhouse the food menu sticks to the basics (such as bitterballen and oude kaas) required for the purpose of slowing down the alcohol absorption rate and for those drinking at the bar shell-on peanuts are provided gratis.
As well as the beers the pub stocks the usual range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and if you fancy a 2 am nightcap with a difference try their speciality hot chocolate laced with the 80% Stroh rum - which sensibly they don't sell unless you're mixing it with something!
Yep, an excellent bar!
Dress Code: Being a proper pub the usual rules regarding scantily-clad women apply ;)

The Stadtheater De Bond is an old building extended with a complete new section.
It houses a great theater bar as well.
