You have to come to Oldenzaal on a beautiful sunny day, that is absolutely the best time to visit. You really should take some time to have a beer on one of the terraces on the marketsquare; the atmospere is always fantastic! Just sitting very relaxed on the terrace, enjoying the sun, having a drink, watching people walk by.... hmmm, I could sit here for hours :-)

Carnival : Wow, the whole town turns into one big party during the carnival. And that is not for just one day, it starts on a Thursday and goes on until the next Tuesday. Everyone wears silly clothes, and goes to the pub or anywhere else where there is a party.
In Oldenzaal there is a big parade on the Sunday. About a 100.000 people visit our little town and help us celebrate. On the Monday there is the childrens parade and on Tuesday evening they close the carnival celebrations on the town square with 'bokverbranden'. It is a tradition that varies from town to town, but in Oldenzaal they burn a goat of wood and have beautiful fireworks after that.

There have been other churches on this spot, but in 1180 they were replaced by this basilica built from Bentheimer sandstone. The tower is from 1240 and the carillon is from 1930 and has no less than 46 clocks!

But Oldenzaal is not only about history and old buildings. There is some new architecture as well, like the shopping centre 'De Driehoek'

At the West end of Oldenzaal the recreational Hulsbeek park is located.

You can cycle, mountainbike, kart, skate, play ballgames, swim, surf, fish, row, ride a horse, walk and more on this 250 ha terrain.

	Hot air balloon madness

Each year at the end of August the "Twente Ballooning is held at the Hulsbeek.

It's a four day event starting at 5PM each day.
Hot air balloons are the mean attraction, but there many avionc related activities.

The final day is closed with the nightglow, music, fireworks and hot air balloons in rhythm.

Toon en Karel Borghuis

Have a look at the statue of Toon en Karel Borghuis. It's at the corner of the Ganzenmarkt looking towards the St. Plechelmus Basilica.

The two brother Borghuis stimulated local music, dance, dialect and songs for many years.
