    Oldenzaal's Museums

by johngayton Updated Apr 4, 2011
    The Museum Quarter

The town has a trio of little museums showcasing different aspects of its history and culture. These are located on the two streets (Marktstraat and Hofmeijerstraat) on the north side of the square around the basilica.

The Palthe-Huis is a former merchant's home restored with the richly onrnate furnishings and fittings of the period and a couple of galleries of exhibits - www.palthehuis.nl

The Museum de Hofnar is the town's carnival museum.

The Museum de Pelgrim features aspects of the town's religous culture - www.museumdepelgrim.nl

I never did make the time for a visit to these as the weather was just too good for indoor stuff. They look interesting for a rainy day thing to do though.

If You're Not Old Enough For The Pub!

by johngayton Written Jul 18, 2010
    Queueing For Good Stuff

This little ice-cream parlour on Bischopstraat was doing a roaring trade with the local youngsters every night I was here. Just before it is a little mini-square with benches and low walls for them to congregate and it really was a pleasure to see them enjoying the simple things in life, unlike back here in the UK where the teenagers just seem to hang around corners smoking and looking bored.

    The English Garden

    De Engelse Tuin - Oldenzaal
    3 more images

The English Garden is a hidden part of Oldenzaal at the South East side of town, just North of the railroad. It's a different name for the "De Haer" park, located on a hill South of the Tankenberg (which is much higher) founded by Gelderman. One of his sons married an British lady and to avoid homesickness she ordered an English garden to be made.

Garden archtect Springer designed a 9 hectares big the Park Kalheupink, what was called the English Garden by the locals.

Have a look at the statue of Toon en Karel Borghuis. It's at the corner of the Ganzenmarkt looking towards the St. Plechelmus Basilica.

The two brother Borghuis stimulated local music, dance, dialect and songs for many years.

This is a close up of one of the walls of the Basilica. These scraches have always fascinated me. You can find these scratches in the wall on a hight of 50 centimeters to about 2 meters, and there are quite a few of them all along the side. The basilica is made of Bentheimer sandstone and this material is quite soft, so it is not strange that they were able to scratch it this way. But I wonder why and how these scatches were made. So if anyone has the answer, please tell me, I would love to know.

There have been other churches on this spot, but in 1180 they were replaced by this basilica built from Bentheimer sandstone. The tower is from 1240 and the carillon is from 1930 and has no less than 46 clocks!

Tour around the countryside. This is a route that you can take by car : the Sagenland route. It brings you to the most picturesque places in the area. But I would recommend to take a bike and explore the area. There are a lot of cycle paths and routes in the area that take will take you through the woods, the pastures and small and picturesque villages. You can find a lot of information about bicycle routes around Oldenzaal on this website (in Dutch) : bicycle routes around Oldenzaal. You have to come to Oldenzaal on a beautiful sunny day, that is absolutely the best time to visit. You really should take some time to have a beer on one of the terraces on the marketsquare; the atmospere is always fantastic! Just sitting very relaxed on the terrace, enjoying the sun, having a drink, watching people walk by.... hmmm, I could sit here for hours :-)
