One of the main shopping streets is the Oosterstraat, just off the Markt (central square).
What to buy: I liked the discount shop where you can buy everything and nothing for just a very few euros. Like shampoos, toys, and household stuff. Lovely browsing!
What to pay: There is rarely an item over 10 euro.
A few years ago I was invited to a private wine-tasting party at someone's house. They had asked the people from Eleveld to organise the tasting. I must say, that of all the wine-tastings I ever had, this one was the very best. The wines were from different continents, they had accompanying little bites like special cheeses that went together very well. But the explanations were simply excellent. Wine-tastings can often be so elite, that you hardly dare say anything for fear of being talked down. Even when you're relatively experienced. These people (it's a couple and she is a Francaise) really have a passion for what they do and have the unique quality to extend that passion to others.
The only thing I knew was that their business was in Steenwijk. I asked at the Rechter restaurant and they faultlessly pointed me towards the shop.
It was with pleasure that I spoke to the owner to tell him all of the above :-)
What to buy: Another thing they do well is special olive oils. I remember buying a bottle at that tasting. The vegetables and salads looked lovely and fresh. And wines of course!
