Steenwijk Things to Do

  • Brand new indoor swimming pool

While on holidays in "Wateren", we promised the kids to go swimming. Outdoor pools were already closed for the season and the indoor swimming pool in Diever was gone and had become a cityhall. Slowly swimmingpools are disappearing because there is no money to keep them open. We looked up the nearest swimmingpool, and that turned out to be in...

  • Speaking of churches: a synagogue

There's a bank now, but there used to be a synagogue on this very spot. On the square in front, there is a memorial of Jews that perished in Germany.Although there's nothing to see, apart from a plaque, it is always a bit emotional to be reminded...

  • Church

I saw at least 3 church towers in Steenwijk. And this little one. Obviously, Steenwijk has had protestants of all sorts! That will have defined society there a lot in early days. All those people belonging to different churches...In any case, this church is called Admonition. It was funny because I was reading the sign on the gate, and thought that...

  • Walk the Onnastraat

Turning off the ramparts we found ourselves in the Onnesstraat. One of the little old streets towards the center. In fact, one of the oldest streets that connected Steenwijk with the hamlet Onna, on the outside of the ramparts.

  • An old shop

Next to the Circus museum, there is an old shop (unfortunately not a shop anymore). From 1880 this was a grocery shop, owned by Johannes Andreas Woldberg. It was run by his family for 70 years, until 1950. It is considered one of the remnants of old Steenwijk.

  • Circus museum in Onnesstraat

We didn't have the opportunity to visit the museum itself but in the court yard we already spotted a lovely merry-go-round.Open Tues-Fri 12:00-17:00 hrsMay-Sept also Saturday 13-17 hrs July-Aug also Monday 13-17 hrs.Groups and parties all year round, on appointment.Entrance: € 2 per adult, € 1 per child

  • Walk the ramparts

Steenwijk is a fortified city and the remnants of the ramparts are still very visible. The nice thing is that these earth walls are high so that you actually look into the city a bit from the top.In fact, I read that the walls are 4.5 metres high.

  • Gate Rams Woerthe

The beautiful iron-cast gate of Villa Rams Woerthe merits an extra tip, I think. It was the first thing I saw when walking up to it. I didn't even know that the villa was behind it, let alone that it was a Unesco Heritage site. The villa itself served as the town hall from 1919 to 1992.

  • Villa Rams Woerthe

This was just an amazing find! Quiet little town Steenwijk harbours a Unesco heritage site. And what site it is... Jugendstil, one of my very favourite art-styles. All those luscious curves. Simply beautiful. The design is by the Amsterdam architects A.L. van Gendt & Sons. They also designed the Concertgebouw (concert hall) in Amsterdam. It was a...

Steenwijk Restaurants

  • Judging the food

De Rechter (The Judge) is a nice restaurant where we dropped ourselves with relief. After all that sightseeing, lunch seemed to be moved further and further back into the afternoon. And it was warm and we were thirsty.Must say the service was very efficient and friendly. A typical Dutch lunch is an uitsmijter... consisting of slices of bread,...

  • Friendly steak restaurant

A very friendly restaurant where the waitress takes time to have a little chat. My friend had her birthday and they suprised us by offering a sweet little dessert of ice cream and pudding. I very much liked the breaded japaleno peppers with a cheese filling. Nice and spicy! Then I had the spicy spare ribs with a jacket potato. The chicken fajita...

Steenwijk Shopping

  • Get high, I suppose

In the Gasthuisstraat, I saw a coffeeshop. Now, I didn't make a photo because there were people sitting outside. Just so you know! Hmmm... a regular pre-rolled joint will give you a pleasant evening, LOL! A joing may cost about 2,50 euro.

  • Shopping street

One of the main shopping streets is the Oosterstraat, just off the Markt (central square). I liked the discount shop where you can buy everything and nothing for just a very few euros. Like shampoos, toys, and household stuff. Lovely browsing! There is rarely an item over 10 euro.

  • Fine wines, vegetables and delicatessen

A few years ago I was invited to a private wine-tasting party at someone's house. They had asked the people from Eleveld to organise the tasting. I must say, that of all the wine-tastings I ever had, this one was the very best. The wines were from different continents, they had accompanying little bites like special cheeses that went together very...

Steenwijk Warnings and Dangers

  • Pedestrian area

You'll often see these signs in The Netherlands, indicating pedestrian areas with the rules and exceptions to the rules. Best to abide with them! This one says:- Pedestrian area- Vehicles can enter between 4 am and 1 pm- Bikes can enter after 7 pm until 10 am - Disabled card holders can enter with motorised vehicles except on Saturdays and evening...

  • Public park rules

Well, it is a bit of an open door. But the sign at the entrance of the park is quite clear:- no motorised vehicles, scooters or horses- no loose running dogs- no tents or wind screens- no alcohol (besides at the cafe)- no drugs- no upsetting of animals- no leaving of garbage- no smoking, cooking or making a fire- no damaging or taking things

  • Don't Forget Insurance

If your current health insurance doesn't cover you while your abroad, you should consider getting international travel insurance just in case something should go wrong.

    Street sculpture again!

by ATLC Written Jul 28, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I love street sculptures. They can add such a funny element to street scenes. Here's two old men sitting on a bench... forever!

Right in front of the Rechter restaurant (see tip).

  • Tourist Information office

The tourist office is also on the central square called Markt. There are loads of free brochures and they can always give you a little street map of Steenwijk. It sure is worth a visit. Not like us, we found it at the end of our walk through Steenwijk, so I had to make do with the signs. The link to the website is here. You can also email them at...
