    Saturday Market.: Hive of activity.

    Saturday market at Amersfoort.

In general we can state that markets are some of the traditional and most popular local tourist events. Amersfoort has a special market area right in the city center at the main square De Hof. This part of city is closed at Saturday especially for the market. This weekly market has a nice size and therefore attracts tourists from surrounding areas. We saw everything for sale on the stalls: clothing, food, wine and, of course, excellent local agricultural produce like aubergines, tomatoes, courgettes and peppers. We learned that during the summer period the area for the market has extended all the way to the Sint-Joris Church. Locals also told us that there was an evening version, but we did not visit that one.

Do keep in mind that this is not only a market to come and buy, but also to enjoy the pleasure of wandering around ... and so we did! Once we entered it we witnessed that here at the market the stand owners still engage in the direct and personalized sale of day-to-day products. We enjoyed the hive of activity and the atmosphere was a riot of colours.

The Amersfoort shopping streets are located in a long line from Riddergang, Utrechtsestraat, Varkensmarkt, Langestraat to Kamp, where you will find the common Dutch shops with well-known names.

In the old town section you have to enter some of the smaller sidestreets to find wonderful small special shops.

    De Nootzaak: Serching for vinyl

    by pieter_jan_v Written Sep 30, 2007
    Nootzaak - Amersfoort

The Nootzaak is a great shop for 2nd hand music.

    The shop carries LP's, Cd's and DVD's.

I was surprised by the Jazz and Country selection.

The vinyl collection is decreasing, but still refreshed at times.

Amersfoort City Centre Shopping: From the HEMA 'til strange antique shops

Some shops use all space to show there stuff

Amersfoort holds within the wonderful scenery of it's medieval centre a cosy shopping area. The shoppingstreets roughly go from the "Kamperbinnenpoort" until the new Cityhall-area. Little bit further you will arrive at the "Koppelpoort" and so have crossed the whole inner ring. In the main shoppingstreets you will found those shops you see anywhere else in The Netherlands, but it's in the little alley ways and backstreets where the special shops are to be found. So let yourself be surprised by roaming around the whole inner city.

little Russian shop "Tsaar Peter": Our address for "Smetana" and "Pilmini"

    by Pavlik_NL Updated Dec 28, 2003
Irina and Ilja on the move to the little shop

We discoveres this little shop, selling all kinds of Russian books, video's cd's and groceries, through internet and were first very enthousiastic. But it's a small shop that offers only few of the (enormous loads) that Irina would like to import to The Netherlands. It also offers typical Russian homestuff and souvenirs (though this last I find a little inappropriate (who buys madrioshka's in Amersfoort???). Anyway, we sometimes visit it when we pass by and take the Amersfoort walk. Another little shop for Russian groceries is in Kleve (Germany), but that you can see in that page: see http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/31ce3/b432/

What to buy: Typical Russian stuff and groceries.

Entrance at city side to St Joris square

At this square you find the leading shops of Dutch fashion and all that goes with it.
In a way, this square represents all shopping malls/areas in the whole of the Netherlands.
