De Hof - The main square.

De Hof seen from the Sint-Joris Church.

Amersfoort is a beautiful medieval village, archaeologists found traces of military camps making it the oldest garrison town in the Netherlands and it is now very attractive. Remains of a true settlement in the area have been found around 1000 BC and the name of the city appeared in written documents in the 11th century. The city grew rapidly around what is now known as the central square, called De Hof. Right here the church of the important and nearby city of Utrecht established a court in order to control the entire area. The main roads into the village winds upwards towards the large tower of the Sint-Joris Church that is situated right at De Hof.

Once hiking your way around in the old and historical city center of Amersfoort you can’t miss out on the main square (called De Hof) on which all these beautiful historical buildings are situated. De Hof is the natural centre of the city of Amersfoort: a stage for various minor and major events, a reference point, a meeting place and the starting point or destination for walkers who want to discover the city. Historically speaking, the square began to operate in a shape and size similar to what we see today in the early years of the 11th century.

De Hof - The busy center.

    Nice fountain at the square.

Without a doubt is the square called De Hof is the busy centre of the town and a true tourist trap. But is this a good reason to avoid it and not visit it? No, not at all. You can also put this main square in the tip section "Must see"! And I can also tell you why :)

All around this square you will see magnificent medieval buildings. For example the Sint-Joris Church, we read that this particular building was first designed in the 13th century and was built on an even older chapel. In recent times some the beautiful building that are surrounding the main square have become home to a hotel. Keep in mind that on a Saturday there is a lively market in the square. In general we can state that markets are some of the traditional and most popular local tourist events. This weekly market has a nice size and therefore attracts tourists from surrounding areas. We saw everything for sale on the stalls: clothing, food, wine and, of course, excellent local agricultural produce like aubergines, tomatoes, courgettes and peppers. De Hof also houses a variety of restaurants, bars and trinket shops selling everything from ceramics to jewelry.

Directions: Right at the city center, you simply can’t miss it.

De Hof - In the old city center.

by Jerelis Written Sep 10, 2013
    Saturday market at De Hof.

During our car drive towards the city of Amersfoort we did some research on Google about Amersfoort and the entire area. One of the things that intrigued me immediately was the fact that there was a nice old gothic quarter in the city centre (between some nice canal) of this old medieval village. A first defensive wall, made out of brick, was finished around 1300. Soon after, the need for enlargement of the city became apparent and around 1380 the construction of a new wall was begun and completed around 1450. In between these city walls the old city center is situated and the natural centre of this gothic quarter is the main square called De Hof.

There are a lot of places of interest right at the De Hof. But mainly it is important that you need to look up to the beautiful facades of the surrounding buildings. Maybe it is a good tip to have a cold refreshment at one of the terraces, sit on a comfortable chair, just look around and enjoy the vibrancy of this beautiful spot. We did so at the terrace of the restaurant Daantje and did enjoy a nice lunch. We can honestly say that we wholeheartedly recommend a visit.
