On the Wednesday before Christmas there is a very special event in Nieuwegein; Kaarsjesnacht (Night of the candles). The event takes place in the former old maritime town of Vreeswijk, nowadays part of municipality of Nieuwegein.
All the electrical lights are dimmed and the whole town is lighted by little candles and some Christmas decoration. On streetcorners and in the Churches there are performaces by different choires. Most of them sing Christmas carols.
A professional programm takes place in the big catholic church. The local inhabitants put in a lot of affort to make all the candles burn from 19.00 untill 22.00h. Everyone takes care of the lights in front of his own house.
