This is one of the two small and local history museums in Nieuwegein. It's located in an old farmhouse in the park 'Oudegein', next to the river 'Hollandse IJssel'. The oldest archeological items in this exhibition are about 200.000 years old. A part of the exhibition shows the tools that have been used on this farm for the last two centuries. The...more
Once every five years in IJsselstein, which is a small town east of Nieuwegein, the biggest Christmas tree in the world will switch on its lights during Christmas time. With good visibility, this Christmas tree can be seen from a distant of approximately 48 km. The lights will be switched off again by the end of the first week of January. To do...more
Vreeswijk , my favourite quarter of Nieuwegein. The old part of this town is built on the two quays of a small river (and former lock). There are several bridges, so the town doesn't feel divided by the water. Old houses, bridges and some churches, together with the water, are waiting to be pictured. Another attraction are the many old ships that...more

Jutphaas is another old part of Nieuwegein thas has been incorporated in the municipality of Nieuwegein. Is is located at the banks of the small river 'Hollandse IJssel'; an attractive river for holiday yacht owners. A French style restaurant with a nice outside. Food is excellent, service could be a little better.foreigners do not go here. I repeat, do not go here.when it comes time to pay the bill, they start counting. That means, it can take hours before you receive the bill. Paying can become a problem!!! We tried to pay using our visa card. It failed over...more
This shop really puts a lot of effort into making your ice cream into a treat! Nice presentation, much choice, even some unexpected tastes like Red Bull Ice! And most important; it just tastes good! So far I only tested the chocolate and tira misu. But I will be back for more.more
From Utrecht Central Station there are trams going to Nieuwegein. It takes about 20 minutes to get to the centre of Nieuwegein.
For the village of Vreeswijk, take tram number 60 to 'Nieuwegein Zuid'. Get out at the last stop. It's about ten minutes walk to Vreeswijk or the ferry to Vianen.
You can use a 'Strippenkaart' (available at the station or supermarkets), and if you have a 'Chipknip' on your bankcard you can also buy a ticket in the tram.
Don't try a free ride, because the checks on this line are very intensive.
Wineshop Trouvaille is located in Fort Jutphaas. It's a good location for such a shop, because the thick walls keep the temperature constant. The atmosphere of the shop is unique. You don't visit only to buy a bottle of wine, but certainly must have a look at the interior of this old fortress. On occasions the shop also organises winetastings Wine!more

On the Wednesday before Christmas there is a very special event in Nieuwegein; Kaarsjesnacht (Night of the candles). The event takes place in the former old maritime town of Vreeswijk, nowadays part of municipality of Nieuwegein. All the electrical lights are dimmed and the whole town is lighted by little candles and some Christmas decoration. On...more

Although I have tried to point out to some nice sites in Nieuwegein, the city in general is quit boring and has some very ugly urban developments.
The city centre is a shopping mall, consisting almost only shops from larger chains, but no place for something special or unique. The cinema and local theatre are trying, but are hidden behind the tram station and don't sparkle. It's one of the most uninspiring citycentres I know.
Another place that makes me feel sad is the Lekboulevard. The view over the river Lek is magnificent, but the houses that are built along this boulevard are completely out of place here. For many cardrivers, passing the bridge from Vianen, this is their view of Nieuwegein. and that's no pretty picture.
Unique Suggestions: When enjoying the view over the river Lek, just don't look over your shoulder or go the the part of Nieuwegein, called Vreeswijk. (see also tip about Vreeswijk)
Fun Alternatives: For nice shopping I usualy go to Utrecht. It's only ten kilometres away.
Cross the river Lek between Nieuwegein and Vianen by ferry. It's accessable by foot and bicycle. Nice way to see the river and Vianen is also worth a visit.Open all year:Monday till Friday, from 7.30h - 18.00h Saturday and Sunday, 10.00h - 18.00h but not on: Sundays and public holiday, from 1 November - 31 March between Christmas and 31 DecemberOn...more
The new museum is open! It's a very nice combination of a working shipyard and a museum. Untill the end of may visiors are welcome on Saturdays, and Wednesday- and Thursday afternoon. The museum tells the story of the village of Vreeswijk, which has always been much connected with ships on the rivers. The second part of the museum is about the old...more
The small, but surprising forrest next to the highway A2. One part of this area is very wet. It's a favourite place for all kind of birds. another part is an open area with some ponds. Their is much natural variety on a relative small piece of land. The forrest is in the capable hands of Staatsbosbeheer; a nature conservation organisation. The...more
Disc Golf is a rather new sport in the Netherlands. It looks like golf, but you play it with a disc (frisbee). In park 'Oudegein' in Nieuwegein you find a complete course. At the start of the course there is an explanation of the rules of this game. But you can also find them at internet.Playing this game here is free. You have to bring your own...more
This is absolutely a very special activity. Have you ever built a sandcastle? Now it's time for the next step in your artistic career; Build everything you want at the banks of the Lek. This activity is usually for groups, but on some occasions individuals can also join the workshops.Have a look at the website for more info. No equipment needed....more
