This place isn't much different than any other shopping center, but it does have quite a selection of items to choose from. It's also a great place to shop while it's raining outside, as it was during our visit. Whether you are shopping for women's, men's, or children's items, you're sure to find everything you need here.
Catherijn Hooj market is right next to the train station and has many stores to satisfy those wanting to spend some hard earnt cash. There are lots of clothes shops and one very large Mediamarkt electronics store.
At Utrecht Central Station you will find 'Hoog Catharijne'. This place offers a lot of shops. So, if you want to shop here, there is a store for you.
The opening hours are:
Monday 11.00 - 18.00 hour
Tuesday 9.30 - 18.00 hour
Wednesday 9.30 - 18.00 hour
Thursday 9.30 - 21.00 hour
Friday 9.30 - 18.00 hour
Saturday 9.30 - 17.00 uur
Hoog Catharijne is the largest mall in Utrecht and you don't find too many of these American-style mall in the Netherlands.
It has every type of shop that you can imagine: from clothing, electronics, health & beauty to food and drink.
Whenever I come to Utrecht I always stop here first, to get whatever I need for the coming day or two (read: wine)
It is also conveniently adjacent to the Utrecht Centraal Station (main train station of the city).
Some of the more famous stores that you can find here include:
H&M (department store)
V&D (department store)
HEMA (department store)
Albert Heijn (big grocery store, comparable to whole foods in California)
Kruidvat (health & beauty)
Free Record Shop (music & movies)
Media Markt (electronics)
Yes you can shop in Utrecht, but some people make the mistake of staying in the big Hoog Catarijne shopping centre, an extension of the central station, for too long. Shame, there's not much more there than the most obvious shops, fastfood restaurants and drug-addicts and beggars. Beyond this horrible place there's a world of streets and alleys full of nice shops that sell just about anything you can imagine. And you want to sniff some atmosphere too, don't you? All you have to do is cross Hoog Catarijne and get out on the other side.
Do NOT go to the shopping mall 'Hoog Catharijne' near the station. It's a big 70's mistake. Apart from being ugle, it's a popular hangout for the 'not-so-fortunate' amongst us...
This shopping centre has over 150 shops is at the main railway station in Utrecht. The brown signpost is pointing the distance to many parts of the world.
