    The academy building is a University owned building, donated from the city in 1886, It's located in Dom square behind the statue of John Van Nassau. Inside the building there is a courtyard often full of clarinet music and complete with some hideous gargoyles.

    Utrecht can be easily negotiated on foot. There are lots of walks clearly signposted in Utrecht. The canals and old town are very charming and well worth a few hours of your time. There are numerous trees around to add to the ambience, and there is a nice unpretentious atmosphere.

    A really interesting thing to do is to take a walk through the Museumkwartier. Cobbled streets and beautifully maintained old buildings (some of which date to the 17th century) make for a very pleasant stroll.

    You can tell you are in the Museumkwartier as they have different street signs here.

    It is not that big that you will lose yourself, but you could easily spend a couple of hours just wandering about - I know I did.

    Paushuize (Pope's House) earns its name to Adriaen Florisz (1459-1523) who lived here and became the Netherlands' only pope ever in 1522. The house was part of the immunity of the St. Pieter chapter. This Dutch pope reigned only for a year: he died soon after he was crowned. Rumour has it he was poisoned.
    Nowadays the Paushuize is the office of the provincial governor.

    The rich widow, Maria van Pallaes, had this row of small houses built in 1651. They were meant for the poor, who could live here for free.
    Ms. Van Pallaes herself lived on the corner at no. 205, where she had a memorable stone placed saying (roughly):
    "Maria van Pallaes, by the love of God, has founded these rooms, and gave meanings of life to its habitants, deserves a place on Heaven's Square" (!)

    On the side of this house you can still see the wooden beams that support it. And it always looks like it'll fall sideways at any minute.. Like a very small child. All the other buildings along this part of the Oude Gracht are big houses and they form like a complete front. And then there is this small house that stands all by itself.. It is very endearing

    This building was donated by Utrecht to the university in 1896. And it is still the place where all the big ceremonies take place.

    The Pandhof (Cloisters) and the Great Chapter House (Autitorium) were given in use to the university in 1636, the year the University was founded.

    The Union of Utrecht was founded in the Great Chapter House in 1579. In this treaty serveral provinces united against the spanish oppression. Thus marking the beginning of the Republic of the United Provinces, the predecessor of the current Kindom of the Netherlands..

    Just next to the Dom is a building of the Utrecht University. It's quite a beautiful building, and even better to look at from atop the tower.

    This is one of several small castles (actually more a sort of fortified housed) in Utrecht's center. Not only is this one of the most attractive, it also houses a brewery with a few good beers, as well as a restaurant. Try Ouwe Daen, an unfiltered wheatbeer.
