Stunning Architecture and Churches

The best thing to do is wander around Utrecht. You can see the Dom Tower from every angle in the city. The Domtoren is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, at 112.5 metres (368 feet) in height. A cathedral was started between the church and tower, but unfinished due to lack of funds and collapsed in 1674. The Gothic Church is beautiful and has an inner courtyard garden open to the public. In the garden, there is a statue of the architect Jan van den Doem and a beaver.

I am not sure what is housed in this building, but I loved the look of it. I have looked at other pages of Utrecht but is not able to find it. Maybe someone recognises it and can let me know.

Crooked stand alone house

I was totally fascinated by this home, standing on its own between two huge buildings in comparisson. It seemed to be somewhat croocked to me. If you look on the side of this house you will see the wooden beams that support it.

Academy Building at Univ Utrecht

This is a pretty interesting building belonging to the University of Utrecht (in Dom square). The statue is of Jon van Nassau, a leader of the region from the 16th century (brother of William of Orange, leader of the Dutch revolt against Spain). The building was a gift to the University from the city. It is used for holding special ceremonies. It is worth checking out inside the building.

Old door, Museumkwartier, Utrecht, Holland.

A really interesting thing to do is to take a walk through the Museumkwartier. Cobbled streets and beautifully maintained old buildings (some of which date to the 17th century) make for a very pleasant stroll.

You can tell you are in the Museumkwartier as they have different street signs here.

It is not that big that you will lose yourself, but you could easily spend a couple of hours just wandering about - I know I did.

smallest wooden house in Utrecht

Crooked?

On the side of this house you can still see the wooden beams that support it. And it always looks like it'll fall sideways at any minute.. Like a very small child. All the other buildings along this part of the Oude Gracht are big houses and they form like a complete front. And then there is this small house that stands all by itself.. It is very endearing

The academy building is a University owned building, donated from the city in 1886, It's located in Dom square behind the statue of John Van Nassau. Inside the building there is a courtyard often full of clarinet music and complete with some hideous gargoyles.

Utrecht can be easily negotiated on foot. There are lots of walks clearly signposted in Utrecht. The canals and old town are very charming and well worth a few hours of your time. There are numerous trees around to add to the ambience, and there is a nice unpretentious atmosphere.

Utrecht: Groot Paushuize

This palace, Groot Paushuize, was built from 1517 onwards for Adriaan Florisz. Boeyens, who wanted to go and live here after his regentship of the later emperor Charles V would have been ended. It would never happen. In 1522 Adriaan became pope ("paus") Adrianus VI. A year later he died in Rome, without ever having seen his house.

Jugendstil pharmacy

There's a lot of Jugendstil or Art Nouveau (choose your favourite) architecture in the centre of Utrecht. A beautiful example is this pharmacy. It dates from 1904 and was designed by architect R Rijksen. Despite the fairly modest shapes and a relative lack of decorations, the "balcony" makes this one of the less moderate examples of this style in the country.
