MIDDELBURG by ATLC Many houses in The Netherlands have names. Especially farms and townhouses in old city centers. But never as much as in Middelburg! Whereas elsewhere there seem to be more gablestones (thinking of Maastricht), the names of houses in Middelburg often are placenames or refer to the former use of the building. I don't know if the names are historical or that some houseowners "cheat" and just think up a name if the house doesn't have one. Leave a Comment

CYCLING by eden_teuling Here you can rent bikes........and start a lovely cyclingtour through town! It is great to cycle to the Kloveniersdoelen to board a boat for a trip, to cycle to Miniatuur Walcheren and to many other places worthy of a visit. Go DUTCH and USE A BIKE to explore.....you could even cycle to my house!!!!! Who would love having tea with me here: email or call me......... Here at DELTA CYCLE you can also leave your bike safely since it is a guarded place! ADDRESS: Zusterplein 8 in the very city centre, side street of the MARKT. Leave a Comment Phone: 0118 63 92 45

TAKING PICTURES OF MIDDELBURG BEAUTIES..... by eden_teuling This tip might come in handy!!! Take my advice and never take photos OF THESE SWEET LADIES in their traditional clothes. Best thing to do is: ask them if you may take their photo and whenever they say :NO (which is possible!) then don't do it. There will be lots of opportunities to take their pictures! Zeeland is just a handful of small islands that have long been very isolated and one of the results is that (mostly the older) people want to keep themselves to themselves and don't want to be photographed. Of course there are nice picture postcards and nice books.......so if needed, leave them alone! Leave a Comment Phone: 0118 628 642

Hendrik de Keyser by ATLC I saw various houses with this little blue sign. It means the owners got money from this trust fund to restore their houses. Hendrik de Keyser was an important Dutch architect. Leave a Comment

MIDDELBURG by ATLC The gablestone shows a griffioen (the name of the house also). My dictionary says a griffon is a mythological animal with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion. Known to be fierce and cruel. Leave a Comment
