hahaha, this is funny. On the World Famous Thursday Market of Middelburg you can even buy wooden shoes made of cheese hahahahahahahahahahahahaha....!!!!!!!!
I'm still falling down on the floor when thinking back of all those stupid germans buying souvenirs like this....
But it's a nice present for home, i guess, but not sure about the taste

On the market, but also in many shops, many tourists like to buy "Zeeuwsche babbelaars", some kind of sweet (extremely sweet but tasty)!
On this market stand, you may taste for free :-)). problably it's there only in summer.

Middelburg is the capital of the province, so you would expect quite a few shops. You're right, there are plenty of shops. But many of the chain variety. I did not see many shops that entice you to browse local products.
The interesting shops (books, wine, galleries) are a bit out of the town center.
You'll find some nice shops in the triangle Vlasmarkt/Beenhouwerssingel/Gortstraat. That's outside the pedestrian area.
Don't go fashion shopping in Middelburg. You'd be better off in Breda.
Personally I find nearby Vlissingen to be much more attractive shopping than Middelburg.

Second hand and antique bookshops. The building next to it has antique maps which I love.
I used to browse here some 15 years ago already and bought quite a few books which I used to have when I was little but were lost.
What to buy: Old maps and books

There is a nice bookshop called 'De Drukkerij' which means the printing press on the square in front of the town hall. An old printing press is also on display in one of the rooms. They sell books, magazines, computer software, CD's, stationery, postcards, lots of books and toys for children, etc. and there is this small restaurant where you can even have a quick bite!!! All over the bookshop there are items like lamp shades, gift articles, curios and paintings on display with their price tags for sale. There is small room for exhibitions where original paintings and prints are on display called "De Directie Kamer" meaning the board of directors' meeting room.
The names De Drukkerij and De Directie Kamer are used here because before this
bookshop started it was the place where the local newspaper "Zeeuwse Courant" was published from and the room was indeed the board of directors' meeting room.
What to pay: Standard prices for books and magazines but some on sale at discounted rates too!!!

Also on the market, you can buy very cheap fruit and a big choice!
Although it's almost all imported stuff (Holland is mostly an applecountry), it's still fresh. isn't it amazing!
Cheap? no!
