We did not take the boat cruise but befor we entered Waterland we stopped at the control station area and walked out toward one of the barrier dams (no fee). This allowed us to get a feeling for the remarkable engineering feat that it is. This is a built-up area with a levee(dyke) and modern power capturing windmills that supplement or substitute...more
The "Delta Expo" consists of documentation, photographs, video pieces, a 3-D fim, fine models and 3 dimensional diagrams of strata etc. This can be supplemented by a long walk to the end of the grounds to the barrier and more important a boat tour which takes 50 minutes and leaves (see your info but at present 1200, 1315,1430 &1545 hours). Waterland contains the Delta Expo (a separate Tip) as well as a cafeteria, a boat cruise of the Delta Works, and all the fixings to make a full day if one had children in tow: including a water slide, water playground, beach, seals , hurricane machine, selas, a train-ride, aquarium and more! There is a cafeteria too (see Tip). Unfortunately there...more
20 hours of north-westerly storm pushed the waters of the North Sea up to a height of 4.20 meters above Amsterdam ordinance zero. This proved too much for the dikes in Zealand. Hundreds of gaps appeared and almost 200,000 hectares were flooded with swirling, salty sea water.the exhibition about the 1953 flood at Delta Expo communicates the human...more
Enjoy walking through the heart of the Storm Surge Barrier. You should visit this contruction inside and outside. Make sure you have your warm jacket with you, it is windy and pretty cold. From the barrier you'll have an amazing view on the water, which "fights" the huge construction.more

Essentiall what isoffered is a fast-food style cafeteria-line, but some hot dishes are there too. I had heard that one of the dishes was fresh Zeeland mussels (a food that I love), so I ordere them. I was told that they were out of season. I asked why there was a sign. They said because someone might want them. So? Well you should know that tey are not fresh but processed and refrigerated. So since I came so far I gave it a try. Everyone else was satisfied with pasta or fries and a Dutch-hamburger(??). There is no where else to eat. All the kids do not seem to mind.
Favorite Dish: The mussels were not so good, nothing like very fresh ones. They were somewhat rubbery and had only minimal flavor. Nothing like those that are served fresh in season. Even when fresh, out of season mussels are only so-so, I should know better. I now remember that once (in May) mussels at Chez Leon in Brussells were not so good and they said they warned me.
If you don't feel like walking and would like to see everything that the Waterland Neeltje Ajns has to offer, take ride with the "train"
Since the Neeltje Jans is located right along the North Sea Shore it can be very cold and windy especially in Winter times. If you're visiting the Watreland during the cold season remember to wear warm clothes, otherwise your visit there is not going to be a pleasant experience.

This is on the North Sea, but it is often not sunny. We were prepared luckily with waterproof windbreakers. If you were going to be in this locality for a week, I guess you would have to have a complete apparel strategy. It rained on and off the whole day. When we got to den Haag the next day was windy but sunny and when we went home the day after...more
