A rural feast returning every year. According to tradition this feast begins 8 weeks before Easter. It starts in Renesse, the next week follows Burgh-Haamstede, then Noordwelle and ends after 7 weeks in Serooskerke. So there are 7 saturdays of fun in Schouwen Duiveland.
'StraƓ rijden' goes back far in time, probably many ages.First time it's mentioned is in1841. In the early days the workhorses stayed in the stables during the winter. As soon as the winter reached its end the stableboys/farmboys took the horses into the sea to "wash" their feet. The meaning of this was to "free the horses legs from evil forces", and by doing so celebrite that spring and summer would soon start.
The event is celebrated enthusiastic these days, not just by the stableboys and farmboys, but by everyone. While the decorated horses make their way to the sea, the people in the Village organise all sorts of festivities. This is a folkloric feast in a modern way for young and old.
