With some help from the Web: "The countryside on the island of Tholen has been affected by man and has been culitivated. The south of the island, especially, was subjected to 'the shovel' following the disastrous flood of 1953. The mudflats and salt marshes outside the dikes are stopping places for water birds such as coots, ducks and waders. During bird migrations, they are favorite places for bird-watchers. From the dike you can enjoy the panorama of the passing and foraging birds."

'Prehistoric' Hekcattle graze on the mudflats of the 'Heen'.
