Later she and Agatha wrote books together; the best-known was "Historie van Mejuffrouw Sara Burgerhart".

Gate at Beursstraat 41 - Vlissingen
    1 more image

Favorite thing: It's great to walk in the old inner city of Vlissingen and discover some of the ancient architecture in the city. The Gothic gate at the Beursstraat 41 is one of the gems you easily miss, if you don't choose for a small detour.

The adjacent house started as home to the Admiralty, the bailiff; later it became known as "De Pauw" (the Peacock).

Favorite thing: The Frans Naerebout statue at the South side of the Bellamy Park honors the godfather of the Vlissingen Seapilots. He lived from 1748 till 1818 and was a VOC-seapilot guiding the ships through the Schelde river delta to and from the Nothsea.
Frans made name by the rescue of 80 seamen from the sinking VOC ship "De Woestduyn".
Later in 1788 he rescued the "Zuiderburg" with 400 people onboard.

2013 Update: The statue has been moved to the Boulevard De Ruyter.

Favorite thing: A part of the Vlissingen waterfront is dominated by the Damen Shipyard, The Former Koninklijke Schelde Group. It's amazing to see the small houses so close to the big shipyard buildings.

Nowadays the bigger ships are handled at the new Damen shipyard at the Sloe harbour.

    Coffeeshop Purple

by Joemidwest Updated Jan 14, 2005
    Friendly place!

Favorite thing: There is only one coffeeshop in town and it just happened to be right across the street from Hotel Royal. A Coca Cola, a bowl or two, and a couple of games of Pac Man, can be an enjoyable afternoon or evening.

  • Martin, you are not alone

by sabsi Written Mar 9, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Vlissingen ... just before a great laugh!

Fondest memory: It is a running gag at Dutch/German VT meetings to make fun of how Martin used to say "Essen Sie schmecklich" when serving food to German customers. In Dutch Bon Appetit is "Eet smakelijk" and as the German and the Dutch language are quite close to another he thought that the German version would be "Essen Sie schmecklich".

Now Bea and I were sitting in this restaurant in Vlissingen and almost collapsed laughing when the waitress brought our food and said "Essen Sie schmecklich". She looked a bit confused when she saw our faces. Hehehe seems to be a common mistake among Dutch waiters/waitresses :-)
