Tower of St. Jacobskerk by myriam_c The church has been built between 1308 and 1328. It has been rebuilt after the big fire of 1911 and completely repaired in 1953-1954 after the 2nd worldwar and the big flood of 1953. Especially the tower of the church is very beautiful. Nowadays the church is used for both clerical services and concerts. Leave a Comment

Coming from the station like I did, you have to cross the locks to walk into town. From here it´s about 1 km walk along the Green Boulevard, so called because all you can do is walk or cycle its length. There are no terraces, restaurants or hotels, just fresh air and quiet. Spend some time sitting on a bench overlooking the Westerschelde, enjoying the ships coming from Antwerp to enter the North Sea.

Cornelis Lampsin was owner of over a dozen ships and did well for himself. He had this house built in 1641. His commerce paid him rather nicely: he even owned the Island of Tobago in the Caribean. He was also the first man in Vlissingen to enjoy a ride in his own 4-horse drawn carriage. The harbour here on Nieuwendijk was the busiest part of town during the 17th century and from the tower on top of his house Lampsins could keep an eye on his ships and cargo. This beautifully restored building now houses muZEE, a museum dedicated to the sea. Inside you´ll find exhibits on maritime history from 15th-20th century, divided in 4 themes: water, work, glory and adventure. Opening times: Mon-Fri 10-17 Weekend: 13-17 Entrance fee: €8 MuseumCard €Free

by 36waterfalls Born in Vlissingen in 1607, this is one of the most well-known dutch historical figures. He started life as a fisherman's boy, became a sailor when only 11 years old, worked his way up in the navy until he became Admiral for the Dutch Fleet. He shot to fame in the battles against England which led to peace between the two countries. In 1676 Michiel de Ruyter died in battle against the French. He lies buried in the New Church in Amsterdam, the city that gave him his position in the navy. Address: De Ruyterplein

by 36waterfalls Halfway the Green Boulevard is the Walradar. This building is the nerve-centre of radar in the area, keeping a close eye on ships that sail the Westerschelde.

During the 18th century ships coming from The Indies stored their cargo in the warehouses surrounding this inner harbour. Most warehouses have disappeared, although you can find some historic buildings here. These days it´s yachts only.

The Orange Mill is the entrance to the town of Vlissingen. Officially a cornmill from 1650, it´s the one that stands closest to the sea in The Netherlands. In use until 1957, restored in 1971. There is still a bullet hole in the wall from a shooting by the English fleet in 1809.

During the French occupation of Vlissingen (1795-1814) Napoleon's troops had thirteen casemates underneath the bastion. One of these housed a bakery that could bake 4800 portions per 24hrs. The chimneys have been removed in 1941 by the Germans during WWII. Not open to the public, use your imagination passing this old corridor ;-) Address: Keizersbolwerk
