YOU DON'T HAVE TO FEAR THE WATER ANYMORE......

In this picture you see my PROVINCE of ZEELAND, a hand-ful of Islands.The thick black point is where the city of MIDDELBURG (where I live) is situated.In 1953 the sea, very high winds and spring tide together swept our country and the South Western part (Zeeland and Zuid-Holland) were inundated and during those icy cold Februari days and nights thousands of people died, their houses collapsed, all cattle drowned and it was awful to see how the sea took back what we had taken from her through the ages!After this disaster THE DELTA PROJECT was started and we didn't want to just close the dykes and dams again but wanted to make the dams and dykes still higher and stronger and in this picture you can see what was done here in Zeeland.All the white line are new dams and dykes and locks and nr. 8 is the MASTERPIECE OF ART : the storm surge barrier. Our Queen Beatrix came to open it officially...
Ferry or tunnel?

We wanted to go over to Belgium and in all my maps there was a ferry service from Vlissingen to Breskens. We searched for the ferry port for a while wondering why the ferry is only signposted for cyclists. We were joking "Maybe it's a bicycle ferry". And how right we were. We finally found the ferryport and were told that the ferry was only for footpassengers and cyclists. There's a new tunnel connecting Zeeland with the south now. It was built only recently .. apparently after my maps had been published. The Westerscheldetunnel connects Goes (near Vlissingen) in Zuid-Beveland with Terneuzen in Zeeuwsch-Vlaanderen, toll to go through for cars is 4,10 Euro.
