    In between stretches of water are these areas of low-lying sand dunes with scattered birch trees.

    The dunes are an important wildlife habitat.

    Harbour looking east

    Just outside the picture on the right is the windmill. On the left you see just a tiny bit of the bridge house (bruggenwachtershuisje) where the bridge watch would handle traffic in the harbour.

    Take a good look at all the lovely old houses along the harbour. Many carry gablestones with dates and interesting images.

    The earthen walls are green all year round. You walk around Brielle in an hour, either on top of the fortifications or just inside them or on the outer side along the moats.

    Bit bad lighting but St. Catherine is a great view from here.
    In fact, the tower can still be seen far and wide which gives a lovely feeling when you return home.

    Somewhere in the 17th century, the harbour slibbed and closed. Brielle lost its foremost place as seaharbour to the neighbouring town Hellevoetsluis.
    The direct connection to the sea was lost.

    Asyplein rose garden

    In summer the park in front of the sea-men's house turns into a rose garden. It's lovely to sit on a bench and enjoy the sunshine.

    St. Catherines was planned to be twice as large as it turned out to be. Even in the 15th century money ran short fast.

    The oldest building in Brielle is St. Catherines Church and it's tower which double-functioned as lighthouse from the times that Brielle was a major seaport.

    Little houses

    Many houses date back to the 16th century.
