There are several trains from the south of Holland (intercities from Breda) and the north of Holland (Rotterdam). A journey from both Breda of Rotterdam will take about 15 mins. There is also a possibility to take a highspeed-boat from Rotterdam, with some stopovers on the route. Nice way to travel, and you can see some nice sceneries. Trainticket from Rotterdam or Breda is about $5 for a return. Dordrecht is also good reachable by car, in about 15 mins. from Rotterdam. Good public transport, only buses. No trams of underground. A short trip to Dordrecht is highly recommended for people staying in Rotterdam. From Rotterdam you can easily take a trainride or a short boattrip to Dordrecht. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

By train. Don't even consider going by car, getting it parked will cause you a major headache. And you don't need a car in Dordrecht itself anyway. It's not that big. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Just brush up on your dutch and how to read the schedules before going to the country. From leaving Schipol, I was misdirected to Dordrecht instead of Utrecht. Upon querying a conductor when arriving at Dordrecht station, he made it a point to embarass me with loud overtones of what train to take. Immediately I felt either he was a racist S.African who fled his country with a chip on his shoulder, or he despised my American presence. Also, Americans traveling solo be warned. I swear your left to fend for yourselves as a middle easterner was making loud and verbal hand gestures inches from my face near the platforms edge. Spoke no english, nor dutch. No authorities in site. Luckely, he ran off for his sake. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

This huge building used to be the residence of the extreme wealthy Cool Family dating back from 1728. It appeared to be too big even for them and was split in two. In the 1960's both parts were put back into one after a thorough restoration. These days the building is split again. Just under the roof is a plague showing Father Time holding the coat of arms of Nicolaas Cool and his wife Neeltje Schouten. Address: Wolwevershaven/Kuipershaven

Until the first half of the 17th century this narrow street housed many butchers. Later it became a connecting road for people arriving in Dordrecht by water. Over the years it became destitute and in the 1960's there was even talk of tearing it down completely. Luckily a housing association decided to restore it and the Vleeshouwersstraat now houses many unusual shops. Number 37 has an ox head on its facade, which has nothing to do with the former butchers (only being placed there in 1885) but all to do with a tannery that was once based here.

A lot of history can be found in the Old Town. This huge warehouse dates from the time when Dordrecht still thrived on merchant service. Stokholm was built in 1730 for a Swedish born merchant. His porters had to carry heavy bags of merchandise up six floors. Working hours were from 4.30am until 8pm! Address: Wolwevershaven 30

This house dates from 1663 and was originally called 'Maestricht'. It's unique because of its coat of arms on the facade. In 1795, during the French occupancy, all coat of arms of wealthy families were taken down. For some reason this one, belonging to the La Tour family, was saved. Address: Varkenmarkt 75-81
